Fear The Walking Dead Must Walk A VERY Fine Line To Succeed

Like many fans of AMC’s hit show The Walking Dead, I’m absolutely excited at the idea of a show like Fear The Walking Dead to help break up the time between the main show’s seasons.  But a part of me wonders if that is all it will ever be: a minor distraction from The Walking Dead’s breaks that are just good enough to hold interest but not good enough to love.

In order to accomplish success as a show of its own, Fear The Walking Dead will have to walk a VERY fine line.  Some viewers will already be frustrated by the show because of the fact that it is set so close to the initial outbreak that there won’t be many walkers at all.  Because of this, Fear The Walking Dead will have to heavily rely on developing their characters to tell the story.

However, there’s another strike against the show because it won’t have roots in the comic books like The Walking Dead did.  Fear The Walking Dead will have to rely on a large percentage of The Walking Dead’s core audience to carry over to the new show.  Sadly, they won’t know any of the main characters on this show and have no investment in their well-being prior to when they debut.

The main thing is that fans will have to be patient while they watch things develop on Fear The Walking Dead.  And in today’s age of instant gratification and drive-thru entertainment like Hulu Plus and Netflix, I worry a bit that fans won’t be as willing to invest much time into even finding out if this new show is good enough to keep watching.

I’m a very hardcore fan of The Walking Dead, so I know that I’ll be tuning in to every episode of Fear The Walking Dead in hopes that it can come anywhere near matching the quality of AMC’s well established The Walking Dead series.  However, I’m not going to hold my breath until that becomes a reality.  Instead, I’ll just watch Fear The Walking Dead and try to enjoy it based on its own merits and not try to compare it to The Walking Dead.

But that’s something that might be very hard to do.
