A Family Dinner

Season 7, Episode 1 “The Day Will Come When You Won’t Be”

Joe says:

The entirety of the premiere of season 7 was incredibly traumatic and anxiety-inducing for both the audience and characters within the show. First off, we had to witness Negan (Jeffery Dean Morgan) brutally murder Abraham (Michael Cudlitz), a beloved character that provided great comedic relief, and Glenn (Steven Yeun), my personal favorite character in all of The Walking Dead universe. We then had to watch as Rick (Andrew Lincoln) was mentally beaten down into submission by Negan following the death of two of his closest friends.

So, when a dream sequence appeared showing what could have been had the group found a happy ending, it is fair to say that I was an emotional wreck. Seeing the survivors who had been through so much enjoying a family meal together brought a smile to my face, if only for a short moment once I realized that this would now be impossible thanks to Negan.

One part of the sequence that really hit me hard was seeing Glenn at the table with his son. Knowing that Glenn would never be able to hold his son and raise him to be as caring of a person as Glenn was is devastating. It is even worse when you consider the fact that Maggie has to raise him on her own, all after losing the most important person in her life.

From beginning to end, this episode was absolutely brutal and heart-wrenching to get through. Having a small look at what could have been in a perfect world made me realize how much I care about the characters on the show, and how I just want them to be safe and happy together. This episode aimed to make us realize just how big of a menacing threat Negan would be to the group, and the emotional trauma that he put Rick (and us viewers) through meant that this goal was accomplished.
