Episode 1003: Ghosts

Season 10 has been an exceptional season over all and one of the best parts (in my opinion) is the focus on Carol.

While I loved her scenes in the first episode, (who doesn’t love the comedic side of Carol?) it was “Ghosts” that I feel deserved a nomination.

Carol is tired, mentally, emotionally  and physically,  all of which is apparent visually. We see the effects of  her avoiding sleep, her fight while hanging upside down, and especially facing down alpha.

When she faces down Alpha, her barely suppressed rage is there as is her lack of fear.  (who thought it would be a good idea to have carol at that meeting?)  She isn’t cowed by Alpha in the slightest and has no problem expressing it. It’s not till Alpha brings up Henry that we see Carol break.  Melissa has always impressed me with how fast she can change her expressions while telling the story at the same time.

Her hallucinations where Daryl is acting as her conscious were done and lend a weight to the “is it  real or not” when it comes to this episode.

At first you’d think she was taking the caffeine pills to stay awake to avoid bad dream or to fight the walkers but as she told Michonne in a deleted scene, it’s the good dreams that she is trying to avoid. Carol is acting more  and more reckless in this season, but its understandable in a way. She lost her son and this time she’s not running from her pain, not anymore.

You see the laser like focus she has on alpha and Melissa plays it to perfection. You see the motives behind her hunt and understand them, at least you should.

There are many more examples and episodes of Melissa’s fantastic work, these are just some of the highlights since season 4.

The fact she has not earned a nomination for a Critics Choice or Emmy is almost a crime at this point and one of the main reasons I side-eye all of these awards.

Is there a particular episode or scene you feel she deserved a nomination for? If so please feel free to leave a message in the comments.
