Will AMC’s The Walking Dead Combine Aaron And Jesus?

Of all the weird rumors that have been going around about the second half of The Walking Dead’s fifth season, one that is gaining a lot of traction and actually making some sense is the notion that AMC’s popular show will combine the characters of Aaron and Jesus from the comic book world.

In an Entertainment Weekly interview with Scott M. Gimple, The Walking Dead’s showrunner was very vague about the upcoming gay character  that will be introduced soon:

"So Robert Kirkman said on Talking Dead last night that you will be introducing “a very prominent gay character from the comics.” I mean, I think that has to be pretty obvious for fans of the comic whom he is talking about when he says that, right?Well, but, you know as a reader of the comic that there isn’t just one gay character in the comic.True, but there is a big one right around this time, however, that would match up nicely.Well, what is “this time,” really? I will say, we do loop back into some really specific comic stories in the back half, but we are playing with time and remixing things, so it might be the character you are thinking of, or it may be a different character."

According to TWDEnthusiasts.com,  the fact that Gimple is so non-committal about the character could mean

"“Scott Gimple is either trying to a) cover up the fact that Aaron will be introduced, or b) Aaron could be remixed with another popular gay character from the comics, Paul Monroe (a.k.a. Jesus).”"

If you’re not familiar with Aaron, he’s the character from the comics that is introduced around this time in the AMC storyline to recruit Rick and the other survivors to come to the Alexandria Safe-Zone.  He and his boyfriend Eric scouted out survivors and watched for skills that could help the community, then brought them back to be “tested” to see if they’re a good fit.

Meanwhile, Paul Monroe is another character from the comics who is gay.  He is nicknamed “Jesus” because of his likeness to the religious figure.  Paul is an amazing survivor, showing great decision making and athletic ability.  He’s part of a group of survivors later on in the comic story that dwells at a colony sitting on top of a big hill.

Combining these two characters could be a fantastic choice in effort to cut down on the number of major characters.  At this point in season 5, there are 15 characters in the main group and it is difficult to follow the stories of the individual characters when there are so many to pay attention to.

What do you guys think?  Would combining Aaron and Jesus for AMC’s The Walking Dead be a good idea?  Or should they leave the characters alone and introduce them just like in the comics?  Discuss your opinions below.
