Is Rick Grimes Losing The Human Touch On The Walking Dead?
By Adam Carlson
The Walking Dead is a great show. Not only is it great because of all the zombies and gore, but because it can show what human interactions are like when society breaks down. Sometimes, niceties go out the window and people do what they have to do to survive. But other times, people go too far and cross over into dangerous territories.
We saw that happen with a couple different groups recently on The Walking Dead. The folks at Terminus resorted to cannibalism while The Claimers accepted violence and rape as long as it was done in an “honest” way. Each group justified their actions in different ways, but we haven’t really seen much justification from Rick Grimes and the gang for the actions that they have taken.
And that brings up a good question. Has Rick Grimes crossed the line on The Walking Dead? In a recent interview with Entertainment Weekly, he discussed the similarities to The Claimers and The Hunters. Here’s what he had to say:
"That’s what I love about this show and the writing the past few years are the echoes. And its almost like there are certain moments and things that we do that resemble the Claimers. Like we’re whistling a lot this season, which is what they did. There’s a scene on the rooftop where I signal to the family that the deal is on, which is that hand clench that Gareth did as well. There are a lot of echoes that we’re putting in that makes you ask: How far gone are these people? How far gone is Rick? Is he too far gone? Is he becoming one of these people? And that’s the exciting thing going on in this journey. The writers keep throwing in these strange moments where you ask yourself: Who are we rooting for here? What line have we crossed?"
There are some things that Rick Grimes and the group have done that have left us wondering if these are really the “good guys” or if they are acting like “bad guys”. Sadly, when it comes to survival, there is no such thing as good people or bad people. There are just survivors. Some of those survivors are willing to farther than than others to protect those they love.
Rick Grimes has discovered this long the way, but he also seems to have lost touch with the person that he was. Season 1 or 2 Rick Grimes would never have ran down Officer Bob in a police car, then shot him, and then been sarcastic with him. That is something more like what his former police partner Shane Walsh would have done.
What do you think? Is rick losing touch with humanity in order to be a better protector for the group? Or have all the events that have happened to him and his group adding up and making him cold to the outside world?
