Rick’s first encounter with The Scavengers on The Walking Dead  showed that they are a tough group with lots of trained fighters. But will they be enough to win the war against Negan and The Saviors?

On the latest episode of The Walking Dead titled “New Best Friends” Rick and the group found a new community and possibly a new ally. The new group hasn’t encountered The Saviors yet and may be exactly what Rick and the other communities need to beat Negan and The Saviors once and for all.

The Scavengers have the numbers that the army of communities need to be a match for The Saviors. They obviously know how to fight and have an established social hierarchy. The leader, Jadis, is a tough negotiator but seems open to working with Rick.

She did push him into a garbage pit with a walking wearing spiked armor but considering what The Scavengers have to offer that might be a forgivable offense.

The Scavengers and the junkyard they have turned into their community seem to have escaped the notice of The Saviors so far. It’s hard to imagine they wouldn’t notice a giant junkyard considering that they have a big geographical reach but maybe they just haven’t scouted out that far yet. But Jadis is willing to commit her fighters to Rick’s cause for a share of The Savior’s considerable stash of stuff and guns.

Getting those guns is going to be a problem for Rick and the group from Alexandria. Negan took all their guns and none of the other communities have any to spare. It looks like Tara is going to have to tell Rick about Oceanside if they have any hope of finding enough guns to arm The Scavengers.

Assuming that Rick can deliver the guns that he promised to Jadis are The Scavengers worth it? Do they have the skills to beat The Saviors? And can Rick and the group trust them?

We Take, We Don’t Bother

The Scavengers creed indicates that they have no interest in politics, alliances, or inter-community dealings. They would rather be left alone. They steal supplies but don’t fight if they don’t have to. However they can fight if they need to.

One of The Scavengers, Tamiel, was the person that fans saw watching Aaron and Rick get the supplies off the houseboat. She followed them back to Alexandria. And when Father Gabriel was along she jumped him and made him give up all the supplies that they group had left. Then she took him back to the junkyard.

That proves that The Scavengers are capable fighters when they have to be. It also shows that they are patient, methodical, and can make good plans. They waited for someone else to get the supplies off the boat and then stole them rather than trying to get the supplies themselves. That shows that they don’t take risks that aren’t well-calculated. And that they know their own strengths and weaknesses.

Rick’s Guerilla Fighter Army

When Rick and the group went looking for the missing Father Gabriel and found the junkyard masses of The Scavengers appeared seemingly out of nowhere. Rick and Aaron never saw Tamiel following them and watching them. Father Gabriel didn’t see her either. That shows that The Scavengers can hide, track, and blend into the environment to watch and observe their prey.

Their skills make them the ideal guerrilla force to fight The Saviors. They know the environment and how to use it to their advantage. Rick and the group use the stolen explosives and any other heavy weaponry they can find or make for a full on assault against The Sanctuary.

Then, The Scavengers can attack any of The Saviors that flee or manage to escape. They can carry out small-scale assaults on any Saviors that are out scouting or picking up tribute from the other communities. The Scavengers are the guerrilla army that can turn the odds to Rick’s favor in the upcoming war on The Walking Dead.
