But breaking AMC records with its real time viewers wasn’t the only news that The Walking Dead made. According to Variety, The Walking Dead not only set a new record for AMC viewership, but it also set a new high water mark for online piracy.
"The episode was downloaded by approximately 1.27 million unique IP addresses worldwide in the first 24 hours since its U.S. TV debut Sunday, according to piracy tracking firm Excipio. That’s more than four times than what the two previous season premieres in 2013 (178k) and 2012 (296k) achieved. That’s a sobering comparison considering “Walking” is distributed in over 125 markets around the world within 24 hours of its U.S. launch by Fox International Channels specifically to thwart piracy."
Game of Thrones and Breaking Bad both had high marks on the piracy market but The Walking Dead has again taken the cake. The series is one of the most popular on television and it’s very clear that fans will do anything to get their hands on new episodes.
No one endorses piracy, but The Walking Dead owning that market too just goes to show how powerful the show has become.
