The Walking Dead 508: What Is A ‘Coda’?

After the news struck that the The Walking Dead’s midseason finale had a title, I had to do a little investigating into what the title meant. I had no clue what a “coda” was or how it could relate to what looks to be a huge episode in the series.

There are several interesting definitions of the word that could have interesting interpretations of the word “coda” when put in the context of the current events of The Walking Dead.  Here are some of the most interesting takes of Merriam Webster definitions:

"“An ending part of a piece of music or a work of literature or drama that is separate from the earlier parts”"

I think this is the most interesting of all the takes.  I firmly believe this to be a play on the fact that Dr. Edwards was listening to music is in his office when he was talking with Beth.  One could assume that if that music were to end, the situation at the medical facility would also be over, since there possibly be no doctors or facility to contain the music player.

"“Something that ends and completes something else”"

So, there’s something to be said for this definition of “coda”.  Ending the situation at the Slabtown hospital could also signify the end of the storyline with Beth (and now Carol).  It could also signify an event that leads to the death of one of the show’s major characters.

Overall, it has to be believed that the title does mean that the end is coming for at least one of the major storylines at the midseason finale.  The fact that “coda” has such a well established meaning in the arts is definitely not a coincidence.

What do you think “Coda” means as the title of the midseason finale?  Or what do you hope that the episode could signify the end of?  Discuss it in the comments below.
