The Walking Dead: Consumed Had Nods To The X-Files And Lost

The Walking Dead: Consumed was an excellent episode.  It had action, adventure, intrigue, drama and everything that you love and expect from an episode of the show.  However there were two subtle nods to previous successful television shows that may have gone unnoticed unless you were paying close attention.

The first was pointed out by a Reddit user that noticed an item with peculiar placement during The Walking Dead: Consumed. From the beloved show Lost, there was a scene were a plane fell over a cliff and a person inside the plane emerged with a dashboard Virgin Mary figure.

In The Walking Dead: Consumed Daryl and Carol were trying to check out a van that was hanging off an Atlanta overpass.  The two survivors got trapped inside the van by walkers, who shoved it off the bridge in an attempt to get to the two.  If you looked closely, you could see the Virgin Mary on the van’s dashboard.

The other nod was a fairly obvious one.  Fans of The X-Files are familiar with the brand Morley.  Morley cigarettes were the Cigarette Smoking Man’s smoke of choice.  Although the brand has existed in film and tv before The X-Files, the popular brand is best known for its use on that show.  The earliest known use of them was in a 1963 episode of The Twilight Zone titled “Nightmare At 20,000 Feet”.

Morley cigarettes had appeared in an earlier episode of The Walking Dead when Dale was seen sniffing a pack of the famous brand.  However, the nod returned in Consumed, when Daryl took a pack of Morley Lights from a carton while Noah was pinned under a bookcase.  Daryl proceeded to light up and smoke a cigarette while casually shooting a walker in the head with his crossbow.

Did you notice these nods to Lost and The X-Files?  Or was the dashboard Virgin Mary just a coincidence?  Discuss it in the comments below.
