The Walking Dead: What If Dawn Didn’t Pull The Trigger?

The entire future of The Walking Dead changed during the show’s midseason finale.  One pull of the trigger ended the life of a major character that was both a fan favorite and a long time staple of the show.

In case you forgot what happened in that intense moment, here is a brief recap:

During an intense hostage exchange situation in the hallway of Grady Memorial Hospital, Officer Dawn Lerner got a little greedy.  She got her two officers back in exchange for Beth and Carol, but still wanted more in order to show the people at the hospital that she had power and demanded respect.  She demanded that Noah be returned to her.

Noah complied, seemingly willing to go back to the hospital if it meant that Beth and Carol got to return to their group.  Beth, however, was not okay with this plan.  She attacked Dawn with a pair of scissors that she had hidden under her arm wraps, stabbing her in the upper chest/lower shoulder region.  Instinctively, Dawn pulled her gun and shot Beth in the head.

This resulted in Daryl returning the favor to Dawn, shooting her in the head before the two sides declared a truce.

So, what would have happened if Dawn hadn’t shot Beth?

Dawn was already at a medical facility where her wound could have been easily tended to.  Beth’s stab wasn’t anywhere life threatening, but pain that intense can cause people to either react or go into shock.  What if Dawn had backed away from Beth instead of shooting her?  Would she still demand that Noah return to the hospital?  Or would Dawn’s need to come out ahead in the deal still remain even though she was physically assaulted?

My guess is that things wouldn’t have changed very much.  Dawn would have still probably demanded Noah’s return and the confrontation still would have continued.  However, Beth most likely would have kept attacking Dawn, since she may have seen this as her last big hurrah to try to change the way things were done at the hospital and make everyone there more safe.

In essence, Beth was the one that killed Beth.  She really had no reason to stab Dawn in a way that she had to know wouldn’t be fatal.  Instead, she sacrificed herself for both Noah and the good of the hospital.

Do you agree?  Do you think things would be different if Dawn hadn’t shot Beth?  Do you believe Dawn would have backed down on her demands after being stabbed?
