Why is The Walking Dead Snubbed By The Major Awards Shows?
By Adam Carlson
The Walking Dead is the most popular show on television. It continues to gain more viewers as the show goes on and is one of the most talked about topics on social media. Sadly, popularity doesn’t translate into award wins.
While AMC’s The Walking Dead can win many of the awards from organizations that understand the show’s popularity, the bigger, stuffier shows have not been as kind to the show. Awards like Spike TV’s Guy’s Choice Awards, The People’s Choice Awards, and The Saturn Awards have all recognized the excellent work done by The Walking Dead’s cast and crew.
It’s a little crushing to see the bigger award shows like The Emmys, The Critics Choice Awards, and The Screen Actors Guild Awards not give The Walking Dead nominations or recognitions year after year.
It is understandable that the topic material of The Walking Dead may not appeal to many critics. The show does feature a lot of violence and gore, as well as scenes that may be sensitive for some viewers to watch. But that shouldn’t have any impact on critics decisions. Instead, they should look at the show as a program about surviving in a world where nearly all hope is lost. It’s really all about people.
Sadly, The Walking Dead will continue to be snubbed by the major award shows. No matter how good the writing, direction, scripts or acting is, expect the more “artsy” shows to get priority over shows the people actually like. Fans of The Walking Dead shouldn’t care what these “experts” have to say about their favorite shows. Still, it’s a little disappointing to see excellent work be ignored.
