Andrew Lincoln Wanted A Rick/Beth/Carl Love Triangle
By Adam Carlson
The internet community died a little inside when they discovered that there would never be a romance between Daryl Dixon and Beth Greene on The Walking Dead. What was even more surprising is the romance that didn’t happen on the hit AMC television show.
In a recent interview with Entertainment Weekly, Andrew Lincoln admitted to suggesting a romantic angle on the show that some folks could find a bit disturbing. Here’s what he said to producers of The Walking Dead during season 3 of the show:
"“I think Beth should have a crush on Rick. And Rick doesn’t have a clue how to deal with it. And also, Carl is really upset about it. And then Hershel gets involved as well.”"
I’m going to assume that the part about Hershel getting involved in the romance is as Beth’s father and not a part of the romance itself. Otherwise, we’d have the most awkward romance in television history. Still, we’re left with a strange situation.
It’s easy to believe that Carl Grimes had a crush on Beth. There aren’t a lot of young ladies around in the walker apocalypse and Carl is getting to be that age where he’ll start having romantic urges. It’s also easy to see Beth getting a crush on Rick. He’s a single man who is take charge and ruggedly tough. But I can understand where Rick wouldn’t be sure how to handle an advance by Beth.
People get lonely on The Walking Dead and find romance where they can take it, but I can’t imagine Rick accepting any kind of advance by Beth. Also, fans wouldn’t have seen it coming since they were obsessed with Beth ending up with Daryl Dixon.
What do you think of Andrew Lincoln’s proposed romantic angle? Do you think it would have worked on the show? Discuss it in the comments below.
