The Walking Dead spinoff series Fear The Walking Dead is going to be a prequel, according to Robert Kirkman.

The Walking Dead is one of the most popular shows on television, so naturally the series is spinning off into new territory.

AMC will be producing Fear The Walking Dead, which is going to take place before the events of The Walking Dead but may not be a direct prequel to the show that is aiming now.

At SXSW, Robert Kirkman gave some insight into Fear the Walking Dead and noted that the series will be a prequel to The Walking Dead — kind of.

"“The timeline is taking place a little bit earlier than the original show,” he explained. “Rick Grimes woke up from a coma and was like, ‘Oh, man, zombies, weird!’ We’re going to possibly see that unfold a little more in the other show. But I wouldn’t call it ‘prequel’ because the entirety of the show is not going take place before [The Walking Dead]. It will eventually form a path running concurrently.”"

So while the series takes place before the events of The Walking Dead, it’s not going to be a prequel that gives us the story about where the characters in the show now came from.

It also doesn’t mean that a crossover is dead. There is nothing that says the characters in the show can’t still be living in the current Walking Dead universe, so there’s always that possibility.

Then again, this could be a Better Call Saul type deal where the show is a prequel but operates largely as it’s own entity.
