The Walking Dead’s Scott M. Gimple Gets Super Mean Tweets
By Adam Carlson
We’ve all been subjected to meanness on social media. Whether it’s trolls, jerks, or just people who aren’t very socially polite, regular people as well as celebrities get harassed online all the time. And it appears as though one prominent figure from AMC’s The Walking Dead isn’t immune to that criticism either.
According to an article on NPR’s official website, The Walking Dead’s showrunner gets some really intense tweets from fans. Some of them are professing their love for the hit AMC zombie drama while others aren’t quite as friendly.
Here is an excerpt of what Scott M. Gimple Told “Fresh Air” personality Sam Briger:
"Gimple tells Fresh Air’s Sam Briger that some of the tweets can be “super mean,” but he adds that he tries to see the larger picture of the fan’s reactions. “This audience likes these characters and they’re passionate about these characters,” he says. “These are characters that I have been conceptualizing and building up, and hopefully making audiences connect with them, so it is a sign of some storytelling success.”"
And honestly, that’s what The Walking Dead is all about. On the surface, it’s just another drama/horror show about survival, but what sets it apart is the attachment that we get to the characters. Remember the outrage that spread across social media after a major character was killed off prior to one of the season finales?
It’s that kind of outrage that proves the connection that people make with characters on The Walking Dead. And their reactions when they see one of their favorite characters deliver a line that isn’t quite in character, be put in a situation where they feel the character would act differently, or even be killed off means that they actually cared.
Because of that, Scott M. Gimple shouldn’t take the hate filled tweets to heart. He should rest assured knowing that he’s helping to make The Walking Dead a show that many people connect to and can create an emotional response by making changes to the show.
Characters are going to die. Situations are going to get ugly. And disgusting things are going to happen. This is The Walking Dead after all. All we should do is sit and enjoy the ride that people like Scott M. Gimple has helped create for us.
