Fear The Walking Dead is a ‘Family Show’ That Happens To Have Zombies In It
By Josh Hill
Fear The Walking Dead is premiering this summer, but if you’re expecting a ripoff of The Walking Dead then you’re sorely mistaken.
When AMC announced it was spinning off it’s popular series The Walking Dead, many fans had reservations about what it would entail. The Walking Dead is sort of hard to spinoff since it is what it is and does a very fine job at being that.
But Robert Kirkman has a new spin on a similar idea to try and make Fear The Walking Dead original.
According to Robert Kirkman, Fear The Walking Dead is less about the origins of the zombie outbreak that we’re dealing with in The Walking Dead and more about the humanity that it wiped out.
"Yeah, I think the idea of having a blended family and trying to make all that work is an interesting family dynamic that could be the basis of its own show. The fact that we have zombies in it is icing on the cake. And the fact that we are dealing with the very beginnings of the zombie apocalypse and watching the world crumble around them, and people are very much unprepared for this world that they’re in and having to very quickly adapt—that’s a second piece of cake next to the piece of a cake."
Really, this isn’t totally unlike what The Walking Dead is about as it’s a story about the survivors of the zombie apocalypse and the effect that has on their day to day sanity. But this seems to be more in the ilk of 28 Days Later or something where it’s a human story that just so happens to have zombies in it.
That’s not a bad way to approach the show and it should offer a fresh take on an old idea that needs to be as original as possible to survive.
