E3 Exclusive: Overkill’s Walking Dead Interview with Almir Listo
By Nir Regev
Virtual Reality Pioneer
I had an opportunity to interview visionary Almir Listo at E3. Almir is the Global Brand Director at Starbreeze Studios and Producer of Overkill’s The Walking Dead. A staunch supporter of the future of Virtual Reality immersion, Almir is confident in Overkill’s bold move. It’s a Walking Dead world, and for the first time you’re going to be living in it. In ways never before possible. All through the elegance of Starbreeze’s new Virtual Reality technology.
Almir shows an E3 attendee trying out the demo and being given a physical shotgun accessory to be used in-game. A rails-on shooter in the style of House of the Dead and Virtua Cop, it’s a relatively short demo. Yet its showcase of the possibilities of the VR headset is limitless. An exciting time for innovative technology, an exciting time to be a gamer and a fan of The Walking Dead. Simply exciting.
The StarVR headset’s resolution is more than 5K at 5120×1440 (2560×1440 per eye). An extremely awesome field of view, super panoramic virtual reality experience. Usually with vr headsets they have 100 degrees that you look at, so it doesn’t deliver the same level of immersion. The Star VR headset represents a breakthrough with 210 degrees, 75% of a human’s natural vision. Brilliant. It’s like you’re actually there.
Interview with Almir Listo, Global Brand Director at Starbreeze Studios and Producer
Will the game introduce new characters to The Walking Dead universe, as the Dark Forces games once introduced to the Star Wars series?
Almir: We will definitely introduce new characters into The Walking Dead universe. We don’t want to fallback on Robert’s previously made characters. We respect those characters and their character development throughout the series. However, we want to create new characters and new storylines that players can invest in.
Where will Overkill’s The Walking Dead fall in the timeline between The Walking Dead and Fear the Walking Dead?
Almir: Overkill’s The Walking Dead is set up in Washington D.C. The setting is the same, but it doesn’t necessarily go in the order the comics turn out. we haven’t announced exactly when in the events, where you are.
What platforms will the game be available for?
Almir: The traditional game will be available for Steam on PC, Playstation 4, and Xbox One. The VR experience has not been announced yet, it’s still being discussed.
Do you feel virtual reality is the future?
Almir:Definitely, I’ve tried several virtual reality headsets. As a gamer myself, I love virtual reality. It is the future of gaming. It’s immersion on a completely different level. It’s amazing what you can do.
Is the VR Headset a separate game experience?
Almir: It’s important to make clear distinctions between the two games. We are making a traditional co-op fps shooter for Overkill’s The Walking Dead with all the horror themes and experiences. The VR experience is a new announcement. These two games are separate from each other. However, they share the same settings and same world.
When will the virtual reality headset be available?
Almir: The VR headset currently in the development stage, and we’re excited to show it to the world. We have no formal announcements as of yet regarding availability and price points. The VR headset is already so functional that we can show it to people and they can be immersed in the experience.
