Fear the Walking Dead: Meet Gloria, the first walker in Los Angeles

Lexi Johnson plays Gloria, the first walker in Los Angeles, in Fear the Walking Dead, the companion series to The Walking Dead, premiering on August 23, 2015. Comicbook.com had the good fortune to speak exclusively with Lexi, who is a huge fan of the original Walking Dead, and especially of the character of Hershel.

According to Lexi, she got the audition just a few months after she had been talking about wanting to be a walker on The Walking Dead. She described her fascinating audition process and some direction she received on the set to Comicbook.Com.

As soon as they put the contacts in with the blood, it was almost like second nature to switch into zombie mode.

Each audition was a full dress rehearsal! Lexi auditioned in front of the team and a camcorder in full make up, wardrobe, contact lenses and blood. Once she was dressed for the part, the casting team wanted to see her walk and her bite! “Alright, start walking. Start pretending like you’re eating someone.”

While Lexi said it was easy to get into character with the makeup and wardrobe, “As soon as they put the contacts in with the blood, it was almost like second nature to switch into zombie mode,” she did receive direction from Adam Davidson when she needed to eat a face in the pilot.

It seems like Davidson wanted some good shots of the actual feast as Lexi says he told her, “Violently rip your head back and forth like you’re really tugging on the meat!”

Lexi also revealed a little special effects trick. The face you see being ripped and eaten is pantyhose. The pantyhose have stretch that apparently makes for good zombie food on film.

I can’t wait to see Lexi Johnson as Gloria, patient zero, when she digs into her first victim on Fear The Walking Dead in just a few weeks!
