Adam’s choice: Daryl Dixon

Daryl Dixon, The Walking Dead - AMC

I know I’m going to get some people who violently disagree with my decision to choose Daryl Dixon as my most hated character, but hear me out.

First of all, he steals valuable storylines from characters in the comic book series.  Making Daryl Rick Grimes’ right hand man has taken the thunder from many of the characters from the graphic novels, including Tyreese and Abraham.  And while I don’t mind when the show decides to change things up from the source material, I do dislike when it weakens the other characters on The Walking Dead.  It is because of Daryl that I feel both quite a few other characters haven’t gotten their due.

  • And before you say that I don’t like Daryl because he’s not in the comics, keep in mind that my favorite character was also not a part of the comics.  I admire Tara because they have used her to help elevate both Glenn Rhee and Eugene instead of drag them down or steal scenes.

While we’re on the topic of stealing scenes, that is what Daryl does.  He becomes the focus of any scene that he is in, sometimes completely ignoring all other characters around him to put the camera focus on him.  It reminds me of the show “The Simpsons” when they brought in a character named “Poochie” to “The Itchy and Scratchy Show” but he was so annoying because he showed up in every scene and ruined them all.

Let’s talk about Rick Grimes “We are the walking dead” speech from season 5.  The power of that speech never had the time to set in before Daryl Dixon disagreed with it.  That line from Rick is one of the iconic and defining moments in the history of The Walking Dead and to have it figuratively pooped on by Daryl was massively disappointing.

When you add in the lack of emotional development over 5 seasons of The Walking Dead and the seemingly invincible status Daryl Dixon has, it makes him even more annoying.  Hopefully, season 6 can help him grow and develop a bit while showing some vulnerability…but I’m not holding my breath that The Walking Dead’s version of Superman will be more like Clark Kent in the future.
