Fear the Walking Dead: A guide to the first season
By Susie Graham
First Season of Fear!
So our first season of Fear the Walking Dead has ended. It has been very dividing for fans. Some have really loved it and some have hated it. Some who have loved it have become very frustrated with those who hate it. I think those that hate it have every right to do so. There no value add, as Strand would say, in accusing them of being whiners or impatient or stupid or any other mean things.
Those who don’t like it are likely frustrated for several reasons. They just didn’t connect to these particular characters. They wanted more action and walkers. Their expectations were very high and just didn’t get met properly. They wanted to love it the same way they love The Walking Dead and just didn’t. That’s okay.
For those of us here who love it. We had a season of getting to know 3 families and a few extra people. We met Madison Clark and her daughter Alicia and son Nick. We met her boyfriend Travis and his ex-wife Liza and their son Chris. We met and lost Alicia’s boyfriend, Matt.
Tobias is a student at the school where Madison and Travis teach. He was very prepared for things to go bad after lots of Internet research. We don’t know where he his now. Last time we saw him, Madison dropped him off at his home where his uncle was taking care of him.
While in the chaos of looting and rioting, we met another family, the Salazars: Daniel, Griselda, his wife, and their daughter, Ofelia. Our families have merged into a large group, though we have lost Griselda and Liza.
We added Victor Strand and we ended the season at his opulent home on the water and plan to move away from the land and onto his boat, Abigail, in season 2.
The show is providing some interesting things for those who like it. It is a very different show, but it is still The Walking Dead world. It is offering a new perspective on the old show in unexpected ways. The walkers are different. It’s challenging our thoughts and perceptions about what we would do and how we would act. I think 6 seasons has desensitized us and given us an over-estimation of our own cold abilities at the very beginning.
It’s causing quite a bit of debate among fans. I think when the debate is devoid of name calling and meanness, it can be really fascinating!
I will continue to update this guide with information about season 2 as it comes out!
