We’re 9 days in. Chris is videotaping an Apocalypse diary on the roof. It’s been 9 days since the lights went out. “Not Fade away” is perhaps about their old lives not fading away? But they are fading away. Inside the chain link fences of the refugee camp that the neighborhood has become their lives seem normal.

Nick lounges on an inflatable raft in the pool. Travis goes for a morning run. Madison talks about painting a room in the house. Nick acts like he’s kicked his habit. Madison and Travis bicker in the kitchen.

Alicia shouting at them to stop acting like things are normal and the National Guard in the streets, finally remind us that we are watching Fear the Walking Dead. The Guard lets us know we are the lucky ones. We are “infected-free” within 6 miles. They have plans to bring in medicine and other helpful necessities.

The families are starting to find their groove and their alliances with other family members and strangers. They all want their place and it’s not meshing well with other members of the family.

Travis wants to help the entire community and Liza does, too. Liza is helping as a nurse. And Travis is helping the soldiers and in whatever way he sees he can. But this leaves Madison on her own and she’s not pleased about that.

Chris sees a light in a window outside the fences and his father dismisses it. Madison is a little more willing to listen to him. She is interested in what’s going on outside those fences. Madison wants to know why the troops haven’t done more.

men do these things not because of evil, they do evil because of fear…I realized my father is a fool for believing there was a difference.

Madison, in fact, goes outside the fences and sees troubling things. Dead people who were shot, but not sick. Daniel and Madison seem to have a kindred spirit connection. Daniel tells a story of when he was a child. His father told him, “men do these things not because of evil, they do evil because of fear.” At the end of the story, Daniel said he “realized his father is a fool for believing there was a difference!”

Ofelia flirted with a soldier and tried to get medicine for her mom. It’s unclear if the flirtation was for the medicine or sincere. Alicia missed Matt and gave herself a homemade tattoo over the heart that Matt had drawn on her arm.

Nick’s addiction came into play with Liza. He was using the morphine drip from Hector, the neighbor, to get high. When the Government Doctor asks Liza to help them by using her nursing skills, it seems as though things are looking up and Griselda and Daniel will get to a hospital for surgery.

But things get tangled and Liza’s desire to help Nick and the troops motives aren’t exactly the same. The troops come and extract Griselda and Nick and don’t allow Daniel to accompany Griselda. They ask Liza to come and her desire to help outweighs her need to stay with her son. She knows Travis and Madison will take care of him. She mouths the words I love you and she’s off with the Guard.
