In the fourth episode of Fear the Walking Dead, the troops had moved in and Travis tried to trust that things would get better, but has he changed his mind?

Denial is a powerful tool used by the brain to help cope with grief, stress and loss. It’s one that we’re not even aware that we’re using at times, which can be frustrating for those around us, and in this case it’s most frustrating for the viewers.

Madison has been making some decisions based on denial, but recent events are breaking through her shell and pushing her into anger and bargaining. She’s been arguing with Travis and lashing out at Nick. Daniel has become a calm companion to Madison. She can tell him what she’s seen and not have him tell her she’s being paranoid of have him try to pacify her.

She’s exploring the outside on her own. Her trust in the troops is low and she’s learned from Tobias that listening to Chris instead of trying to reassure him is probably the better option. Ironically, she’s blind to that same respect and open trust level with her own daughter.

Travis is helping the neighborhood. Mayor Manawa. His solution is to lie. Tell your loved ones that everything will be okay. The stoic man in charge. Go for a run. Show them life is normal.

He thought he’d help his son by checking out his story about the light in the window with one of the Guard members. After watching Nick and Griselda effectively be kidnapped and taken to the hospital without being able to have Daniel accompany his wife and the extraction being very unfriendly, Travis is faced with some harsh truths about the military presence.

Seeing the quick-burst flashes of light in the window where Chris claimed to see signs of life and Travis had his suspicions as well, has Travis finally seen the light?

What do you think? Is Travis’ denial cracking? Will he start working with Madison now as a team? Or is his denial and fear too powerful? Does he need to place his trust somewhere in order to have hope? Is this going to put him in danger?

P.S. As frustrating as it is, it would probably be less realistic to have a mild-mannered dad and teacher just turn into a gun-toting, bad-ass, confrontational revolutionary in 9 days even after seeing what he’s seen.
