Fear the Walking Dead: Season Finale Recap-The Good Man
By Susie Graham
The season finale of Fear the Walking Dead had everything you’d expect from a season finale. Emotion, action, walkers and death. After finding out the meaning behind Cobalt last week, the group was bound by time. Daniel was prepared to kill Andrew and get about the business of rescuing Griselda and Nick.
Madison and Travis had the kids start packing again. They told them the plan was back on to flee. The military was retreating and they needed to get out.
In the basement, there was a big issue as you’d expect between Travis and Daniel about the usefulness of Andrew Adams. Travis talked them into bringing Andrew along to the rescue. Even Madison is a little upset and asks Travis to take Adams with him so the kids won’t see him. She defends herself by telling Travis that she’s certain he would do whatever it took to save his child.
Ofelia confronts her father about lying to her. He says he protected her. She asked if her mother knew. When Ofelia tells him she thought he was the victim, Daniels only response is, “Would you rather that be true?”
Andy convinces Travis to let him go. He knows Daniel won’t let him live.“There’s no story here that doesn’t end with me dead.”
Daniel enters the restricted area followed by a herd of infected warning the guards to save their ammunition, The guards start picking off the skinbags and Daniel is a ghost.
Travis tells Chris and Alicia to drive to the camp on their own if they think things have gone wrong. They get left behind in the parking garage.
Exner sees the compound is compromised but lies to the evacuation team. She tells Liza to run and escape. But Liza gets outside and can’t bring herself to get onto the chopper.
Nick and Strand make their way out of their holding cell passing by dozens of people begging for help. When Nick wants to know why they wont help them, Strand delivers two classic closer lines in a row. To Nick: Helping them could hurt us. To a beggar: There’s no value add.
Chris and Alicia have a discussion that mirrors their parents. Alicia even says that Chris sounds like his dad. To which he retorts that at least his dad tries. Alicia says that you can’t save everyone, likely thinking of her father, and perhaps even Matt and Susan. Chris doesn’t get her thinking. After they are forced to hide in the car fearing infected or some sounds, 3 soldiers break the glass window and bully the keys from Alicia and knock out Chris.
Chaos ensues and the group makes it back together but not without their first taste of walker pushing, shoving, bludgeoning and crunching. Guns, hammers, big random tools and carts. Ofelia, Nick, and the others get on the action, killing, pushing, and protecting each other.
Liza has to break the news about Griselda to Ofelia and Daniel. Ofelia wants to see her mother. She is upset to learn there is nothing h to see. They make their exit through the hospital. Liza invites Bethany to join them. Where do you think your family is going to go? Dr. Exner tells them a way out, but stays put herself, despondent. She looks like she’s considering the bolt gun to end her life.
Strand suggests going west. I have a home on the water, I have supplies. I’m prepared. On the way out they see the burned bodies. Ofelia cries as she thinks about her mother.
They make it back to the garage and find the car gone. Alicia and Chris come out of hiding. The soldiers took the SUV, but left the kids. Out of the shadows emerges Andy with a gun pointed at Salazar. Travis sees red. Ofelia tries talk him down. Please. Andy moves his aim and shoots Ofelia. Travis beats the daylights out of Andy.
They make their way west to Strand’s opulent mansion. Liza takes care of Ofelia’s arm wound. She will live. But Liza reveals to Madison that she was bitten. She flips the script on Madison about it breaking Travis. And asks Madison to kill her. Travis though decides to do it for her. An act of love and kindness. The shot rings out.
Madison apologizes to Nick who has a little moment about the apocalypse and his addiction. He talks about how he’s always lived like this, not knowing what’s going to happen next, and now it’s like everyone else is catching up to him.
Strand reveals that they aren’t staying in his house. They are headed toward Abigail. Abigail is his big, luxury boat that Nick sees through the telescope.
So season 2 will take us out to sea.
