Fear the Walking Dead: Fear needs to get fearless
By Susie Graham
Season 2 of Fear the Walking Dead is a perfect opportunity for the show to lose the fear and start getting fearless. It has an audience. Start letting go! I like the show. But I read the comments everyday from the viewers who are frustrated with it and I understand their point of view. I also know I keep thinking about Fear even when I know my excitement should be turned to season 6 by now. So that says something.
I know they are different shows, but I like that they are uniquely linked. They make you change your perspective about the other shows. I’m watching The Walking Dead marathon with different eyes because of Fear the Walking Dead. Something I remember about The Walking Dead from the very beginning was that it was fearless.
I don’t know how they accomplished it, but it was truly fearless. We had our main character shoot a little zombie girl in the first few seconds. That same character had marital problems, a cocky partner and then got knocked out by a kid with a shovel. We had a crazy man using the “n” word get handcuffed to a roof and a key dropped down a drain.
The choices that Fear the Walking Dead has made have already been made. I don’t know that I’d exactly call them safe, but I think it’s time to really get fearless. The show has an audience and with the finale, it will likely maintain and grow the audience. Get fearless! Take some risks!
The fearlessness doesn’t have to be done in the same way as on The Walking Dead. It can be done with tension or suspense or some other way. Something I was really anticipating in this show was psychological tension. I have faith that the writers and producers will find their groove and Fear will become as fearless as it can be.
