On the premiere of season 6 of The Walking Dead, the character of Nicholas started toward a possible redemption that fans seemed to embrace.

What has Nicholas done that he needs to find such redemption? He followed the ways of Alexandria and cut and ran when things looked top dangerous with the roamers. He never learned how to really handle them well enough to be able to survive and help those around him as well.

So when he got caught in the revolving door with Glenn and Noah and didn’t see a way our for all of them, he panicked. When he saw a way out for himself, he took it. Unfortunately, that way out for him created a way in for the walkers to get Noah.

Ashamed, he tried to abandon Glenn. When that didn’t work, he tried lies. Afraid the lies wouldn’t hold, he tried to kill the only witness to the truth. That witness survived the murder attempt and still remained silent.

Now we are witnessing something in Nicholas. We don’t know exactly what it is yet. We have to watch it play out to be certain. It could be that Nicholas is playing the sheep. What purpose that would serve, I can’t think right now, but The Walking Dead has taught us not to trust too easily.

It could be that Nicholas is trying to pay back Glenn for not having him exiled or telling the town about his deeds. Perhaps, Nicholas has seen enough of the outside now and has learned from Glenn.

What I hope doesn’t happen is another situation where panic takes over. I hope that Glenn can talk him through his panic and help him learn how to tame his panic and channel his energy toward problem solving and helping each other in order to escape the walkers or other dangerous situations through team work, like they did with the walkers Nicholas  took care of with Glenn and Heath.

The other interesting thing about Nicholas’ redemption is how quickly the fans became eager to see Nicholas change. I hope we’re not disappointed.
