The Walking Dead: Who died in Now?
Several of our survivors on The Walking Dead are reunited in season 6 episode 5 titled “Now”. Others remain unaccounted for. Either way, we know loss is inevitable in this world. Let’s take a look at the damage done in episode 5.
Gnarly walkers
- The gang takes out a few walkers in order to bring Rick safely within the gates.
- We see Jessie put David’s wife, Betsy, out of her walker misery. Are we to assume that David’s bride took her own life after hearing of his demise? That is indeed the case according to the Talking Dead recap. (Side note: Jessie’s M.O. seems to be stabbing through the eye socket.)
- Then we see Deanna take out her first walker, a reanimated Wolf.
- But those two walkers in the sewer take the prize tonight. They were super ooey gooey! I am trying to recall if I have ever seen any walkers more sticky and slimy than those two. Props to The Walking Dead makeup crew on this new breed of walker!
Close calls
Dr. Denise had us worried about the fate of Scott with his oozing infected wound. Thankfully, pep talks from both Tara and Jessie inspired the good doctor to dig deeper and she was able to stabilize her patient.
Deanna also had us on the edge of our seats when she kept stabbing the Wolf walker everywhere but the head. After numerous hits, she finally made the fatal blow and survived the attack.
Maggie had an extremely close call in the sewer. Despite her proclamation that she could have handled the situation herself, it is Aaron who knifes the sticky walker who was getting oh so very close to Maggie’s face.

Metaphorical losses
- As the Alexandrians face the reality that they are most certainly not safe, nor adequately prepared for the world outside the walls, we see the death of their naiveté.
- And Deanna’s “pie in the sky” plans for Alexandria take a backseat to newer, bolder plans for the community as she is now armed with a renewed confidence.
- Sam is no longer the bold child who pestered Carol. Clearly, his sense of security has taken a hit as he cannot even bring himself to come downstairs.
Some life among the death
Finally, how can I write a “death” article without mentioning the news that slaps death clear in the face – Maggie’s pregnancy! This life affirming news certainly bears a nice contrast to the dark aftermath of the Wolves’ attack and the ominous ring of walkers surrounding the community. Despite not knowing her husband’s whereabouts, it would appear that the pregnancy gives Maggie just enough hope to erase Glenn’s name from the memorial wall.
Final count: 1
Walkers do not count. Metaphorical losses do not count. But the death of Betsy in desperation over the loss of her husband, most definitely counts.
Until next week’s episode of The Walking Dead . . .
