The Walking Dead: Is Jesus like Abraham and Michonne?
By Susie Graham
With the arrival of Negan and the Saviors on The Walking Dead and the potential loss of many in Alexandria our group may need some help.
Another The Walking Dead comic book character may provide some of that help, eventually. Jesus is coming! No, our group is not looking to Father Gabriel to lead them. At least I don’t think that’s a plot twist that’s in the near future. And the character isn’t a Latino with an accent mark on the u as in Jesús.
It’s pronounced Jesus. His character, Paul Monroe, gets his nickname from his bearded appearance. (I used to call one of Rick’s bearded phases his Moses beard.) Jesus comes from a community called the Hilltop. I’ve heard that word tossed around on Twitter in excitement from comic readers.
I’m as excited about Jesus as I am about Negan. His character introduction will be similar to Abraham and Michonne, I think. A kick ass character that is on our side. We’ve had lots of quirky and interesting characters join our team, but we haven’t had a real badass in a while. Some have grown, like Aaron and Tara, and Heath has potential, but Jesus sounds like he’s coming in with everything already there like Michonne and Abe did.
I’m sure he’ll evolve in interesting ways and we’ll learn more about him as he blends with our group, which might take some time. Rick and the others didn’t take to either Abe or Michonne at first. And Rick punched Aaron in the face within the first few minutes of making his acquaintance.
Jesus wears a navy blue beanie, similar to the one Tyreese wore, so we’ll feel the heart of Tyreese around us, too. Robert Kirkman told Entertainment Weekly about how fun Jesus is in the comics for him to write:

“Jesus is just such a fun character to write in the comics. At this point in the life of the series, my thought is the apocalypse has been going on for so long, the people you encounter in your day-to-day life have to be extremely skilled. And they’ve been surviving for a reason, whether they were at a place like Alexandria that’s very safe, or they’re a great leader of their group and somewhat sadistic but in control of their group like Negan, or someone who’s an absolute, complete badass like Jesus.”
We need another badass! I can’t wait to meet the adorable Tom Payne as Paul Monroe. We don’t know when he will appear, but it will be sometime after Valentine’s day and likely before St. Patrick’s day.
