On the heels of some heartbreaking deaths in the mid-season 6 premiere, we enjoy a lighter episode with ‘The Next World’.  Granted there were some serious moments in The Walking Dead season 6 episode 10, but there was also a quite a bit of humor, not to mention some romance. With all that said, we still need to evaluate the losses we faced in tonight’s episode. What, you thought I would not have anything to write about? Let’s break it down.

A spattering of losses in ‘The Next World’:

There seems to be an unspoken rule that the driver controls the music in the vehicle.  Sure enough, Daryl loses the battle of the bands in the car on their supply run when despite Daryl’s protests, Rick plays his choice of CD.

I also have to think Rick lost a little bit of his dignity when he realizes that Paul Rovia/Jesus/Houdini lifted the keys off of him so easily.

Daryl so sweetly attempts to salvage the sodas in the vending machine for Denise to give to Tara.  However, the “pop” does not survive the vending machine being dragged behind the stolen truck.

And don’t forget the truck!  Rick and Daryl lost the truck twice, once when Paul Rovia/Jesus/Houdini cleverly diverts their attention with firecrackers to steal the vehicle, and a second time, when the truck and its contents (including a pasta maker of all things!!) sink to the bottom of the lake.

And let us not forget that Rick lost his bachelorhood when he and Michonne FINALLY realize they are more than just friends. Sure enough, it turns out it was “More Than A Feeling” I had about those two all this time!

Of course, on a much more serious note, we do see walker Deanna take her last breath in this episode of The Walking Dead.  Spencer has been combing the forest after his shift each day. Carl also realizes the importance of Spencer being able to find her and be the one to end her pain.

I myself was rather troubled at the end of episode 8 knowing that she had run out of ammunition and would most certainly turn.  I hated the idea of her roaming around as a walker.

More from Undead Walking

Sure enough, Carl finds walker Deanna and brings her to Spencer who mercifully ends her existence.  He has the opportunity to hold her close and know that she is no longer suffering.

While Spencer has lost his entire family, he accepts Michonne’s insistence that she and the other Alexandria survivors are family to him now.

I think that covers the losses encountered in ‘The Next World’. We came out mostly unscathed in this episode and it is a nice change when we can take a lighter approach to this column. But who knows if that will last much longer? Meanwhile, be sure to share in the Comments if I missed something this week.

Final count: 1 –  Only walker Deanna really counts in the death toll. Everything else is just par for the course in The Walking Dead universe.
