The Walking Dead: Michonne – A Telltale Games Miniseries was released on February 23, 2016 on Xbox One, PS4, PC, Android and iOS for zombie fans worldwide.

Fans of The Walking Dead seems to love the video games created by Telltale Games. Despite only having made two installments in the series so far, characters like Lee and Clementine have quickly become fan favorites among gamers. Now, Telltale tackled a subject familiar to a wider audience, the character Michonne.

The Walking Dead: Michonne had a fun play through for episode 1, titled “In Too Deep.” But there were some minor issues that kept the game from being as entertaining as previous games from Telltale. Here is a review of the game, starting from the beginning:

***WARNING: GAME SPOILERS BELOW***

A trippy intro is usually a great way to begin a game, but it felt a bit forced. Showing the kids in an apartment and switching back and forth to a woods filled with zombies was an interesting way to show the transition of normal life to living in the apocalypse, but scenes like the door in the woods made it all feel too artsy. However, at least the music that accompanied the intro was a solid choice.

The story picks up from the point in the comic books where Michonne joins Pete on a boat. There is some comedy with a man named Oak drinking out of a “Worlds Best Mom” coffee mug that should get some chuckles as well as a joke from Pete about the boat no longer being under warranty. However, there is some seriousness here, as their usual trading partner isn’t available on the radio. While searching the channels, they came across a female voice who sounded like needed help.

The voice acting isn’t fantastic in this series. The dialogue sounds forced and over-enunciated. At some points, it can be so distracting that it’s easy to miss characteris flirting and get emotionally attached to the situations. However, much of that clears up by the time you reach the final location in The Walking Dead: Michonne.

As soon as you have to decide to tell the truth or lie about your situation, things get interesting, as your answers are then used against the another of the captives, with some unexpected and explosive situations. Sadly, this was one of the only real interesting parts of chapter 1, as the game chugged along to the inevitable ending credits.

Overall, The Walking Dead: Michonne was not a great game from Telltale Games, but it wasn’t horrible either. Fans hoping for a story as masterfully told as the first two The Walking Dead games from the developer will likely feel the same way, but now that there is an established character base, some characters that could be villains, and an objective for the next chapter, things are looking up.
