Fashion is something often overlooked on AMC’s The Walking Dead. Let’s take a look at some of the new costume pieces in S6E12 thanks to Eulyn Womble.

Who are you wearing?  It’s a popular question on the red carpet.  But what about on The Walking Dead?

Answer: Womble

That’s right, the lovely and talented Eulyn Womble helps bring our favorite characters to life with the amazing wardrobe designs we have come to love, and even cosplay on occasion.

And it is not often that our survivors in The Walking Dead add a new piece of clothing to their signature gear, so any changes are well worth mentioning. Then again, some things you never want to change, case in point – Rick’s iconic jacket. Let’s take a look at some of the wardrobe highlights in season 6 episode 12 ‘Not Tomorrow Yet’.

Carol’s fitted white shirt

Carol looked fresh and lively in her crisp white shirt while foraging for acorns in the woods. Unfortunately, the look was not a lasting one when a walker ascends upon her. While the walker is no match for our Carol, the white shirt loses the bloody battle. Interestingly, Father Gabriel had a similar encounter with a walker in season 5, but his white shirt remained spotless….hmm.

Then again, the lyrics of the song playing during Carol’s scene may have foreshadowed the entire event. Take a listen and you will hear the phrase “and I had a pure potential and a soiled white shirt” sung right before the walker encounter. Coincidence? I think not. Deeper meaning? I think not. Nevertheless, it was a fun little nugget.

Carol’s gear for the assault on the Saviors was  reminiscent of her look in season 4, right about the time that Rick banished her from the prison. And it creates a striking contrast with her sweater sets. I happen to think these different outfits reflect the emotional battle Carol is facing in regard to who she was, who she is, and who she wants to be. And just as she wore both types of outfits in this same episode, I don’t think her past and present roles have to be mutually exclusive. She is a culmination of all her experiences and perhaps her wardrobe can reflect that.

Abraham’s do-rag

Abraham dons a do-rag in episode 12 and I think he pulls off the look quite well. I understand that this look comes straight from the comics, but it is new to me.  And perhaps it mirrors his new outlook on life and love. I have to say He looks pretty tough in this style, not that he’s ever been lacking in the fierceness department!

Eugene’s “Virginia is for Lovers” t-shirt

Eugene is well-known for his social awkwardness and lack of finesse. And his choice of t-shirt could not have been more poorly timed being the first thing Rosita sees after Abraham abruptly calls off their relationship. Oh, Eugene, there you go pouring salt into a fresh wound without even trying. Then again, he does offer her a cookie (sort of).

Tara’s cozy sweatshirt

So, this item is not new to Tara, but it has taken on a new role in season 6. You know how fashion trends come and go. Last year’s “it” item can be replaced with the next new trend very quickly. Maternity wear is no exception. Tara’s hoodie has quickly eclipsed “Bob’s jacket” as the most popular trend in pregnancy disguise.

While both items have been used to hide growing baby bumps, the hoodie dominates season 6 of The Walking Dead. (Congratulations to both Sonequa Martin-Green and Alanna Masterson on the birth of their son and daughter, respectively!) And our pregnancy fashion discussion would not be complete without noting Maggie’s cute, new looser fitting shirt to accomodate her character being with child.

Michonne’s new shirt

We see Michonne sporting a long-sleeved mustard colored fitted shirt beneath her signature vest. Thankfully, the fit still shows off her sculpted arms. I’m also guessing the fabric is moisture wicking, which is a valuable feature in Virginia as the humidity is not to be reckoned with. I know, I grew up there.

Jesus goes undercover

I think Jesus may have a stash of different colored kerchiefs at the ready. He covers his nose and mouth with a black one in episode 12 as he attempts to go unrecognized into the Saviors’ compound to rescue his new Alexandria friends. And thank goodness he does, because those piercing blue eyes and long brown hair are certainly not giving anything away, wink-wink!

Again, any discussion of The Walking Dead wardrobe would not be complete without giving props to masterful costume designer Eulyn Womble. I never tire of hearing her discuss her process and the careful thought she puts into all the pieces, whether worn by the living or the dead. Each piece has a story and makes the end product even richer!
