There is only a limited supply of guns an ammo in the zombie apocalypse, and that will likely make guns more rare on AMC’s The Walking Dead in the future.

Some of the most amazing scenes in The Walking Dead‘s history have involved guns. Whether it is opening fire on hordes of the undead or protecting themselves against rival humans, guns have been a threat on the AMC drama since the first season.

However, that might not be the case in the future. With there only being a limited amount of guns and ammunition out there, the survivors may have to begin limiting themselves and saving their long-range weapons for instances where they are absolutely necessary.

According to an article on the Business Insider website, property master and weapons expert for AMC’s The Walking Dead John Sanders discussed the future of weaponry on the hit show and how survivors could be forced to transition from guns to hand-to-hand combat weapons.

"“As the story continues, we’re going to see a lot more transfer to more melee weapons,” Sanders said. “Bullets are a finite instrument … and we need to make sure that each character can only use so many and that they’re thinking about it.”"

Having a lot of guns might not be an important thing for Alexandria if they can’t have enough ammunition to use in them. Still, guns could be used as a threat even if there are no ammunition to help convince enemies to stay away. Despite that, survivors will likely be stockpiling ammunition to prepare for events that might happen in the future.

"“Bullets [will] start to become really valuable,” he said. “And you certainly wouldn’t just spray bullets at something if you’re not hitting something. So, I expect we’ll probably move more and more away from the machine guns.”"

Some survivors already get by quite well without using guns. Michonne’s sword is a great example of a weapon that requires no ammunition but can still be very effective against humans or zombies. The Walking Dead will likely see more survivors trying to find weapons they are comfortable with to save ammo in the future.

Despite the likely shortage of bullets in the future, The Walking Dead shouldn’t loose any of its drama or excitement. There will always be guns on the program, but watching Rick and the gang from Alexandria learn to get by without using guns should be fun to watch as the series goes on.
