The Walking Dead can be a hard place for many survivors, but Carl Grimes seems ready to take on a much bigger role on AMC’s zombie survival drama.

For the most part, Carl Grimes has faded into the background of AMC’s The Walking Dead during season six. Apart from his incident where he lost his eye and his awkward love triangle with Enid and Ron Anderson, he has almost become a forgotten player in the zombie apocalypse.

Hopefully, AMC has some bigger plans for young Mr. Grimes in season 7 to help take advantage of the solid acting skills of Chandler Riggs. Fans have gotten to watch Riggs grow and develop over the course of six seasons of the show so far, and he doesn’t look to be departing from the hit program any time soon, so making his character more of a part of the show would be great in keeping viewers invested in his character.

Still, there are some that remember the annoying, younger version of Carl Grimes. I’m sure everyone remembers the Carl who talked back to his father, would never stay in the house, and got one of the best characters on the show, Dale Horvath, killed.

But that was all several seasons ago. Now, the young man has shown that he can make some tough decisions, is handy with a firearm, and is ready to find his own kind of love on The Walking Dead.

It’s amazing to look at how long the hit zombie survival drama has gone on and think about how long Carl has been in the background of the show. Since the start of the sixth season, with many episodes focusing on Carol, Morgan, The Wolves, and the zombies surrounding Alexandria, Carl sat in his house watching Judith again. But that needs to change.

Next: Who is likely to die during The Walking Dead season 6B

If fans follow the comics, they will know that soon Carl becomes a much bigger part of Alexandria and hopefully the powers that be at AMC will keep Carl down that path and help bring his character to the forefront of the show. Not only does the character of Carl deserve that, but the actor, Chandler Riggs, also deserves a little time in the spotlight on The Walking Dead.
