Fear The Walking Dead: Who died in Monster?

facebooktwitterreddit

The season two premiere of Fear The Walking Dead started off in quite a frenzy. In ‘Monster’ our survivors are taking multiple trips via dinghy to Strand’s yacht The Abigail. And things get rather dicey fast! Let’s see who makes it through the episode alive and who does not.

Beach Breach

Strand, Ofelia, Daniel, Alicia, and Nick have made it safely to the Abigail. Strand sends Nick back to shore to bring Travis, Maddie, Chris, and Liza’s body aboard The Abigail.

Chris resists leaving with his mother’s corpse. During this hesitation, walkers swarm the beach and the gang is outnumbered. Drift wood and rocks become weapons to fight the undead. But Nick takes the battle prize when he takes out a walker with the boat motor to a walker’s face.

Liza

I know Liza passed at the end of last season, but it almost felt like we lost her all over again as her burial at sea was a large focus of the episode. Chris struggles not only with letting her go but also with her being eulogized among mostly strangers. He becomes enraged and shoves his mother’s remains overboard.

Interestingly, as Travis recalls Liza’s personality and her desire to always help people, we get subtle references to another theme present throughout the episode. That would be the dilemma of deciding whether or not to help other survivors or not.

When another groups of survivors are found at sea, Strand clearly says, no, they cannot come to their aid. Travis struggles with the concept, yet ultimately sides with Strand. Madison is conflicted. And Alicia seems to embrace the opposing philosophy – let’s help everyone, even strangers! Captain rules and the other survivors are left in their wake.

Nicholas

Do not “fear”! Nick is still safe and sound but he makes it very clear to Strand that he will not respond to being called “Nicholas”. This is the moniker Nick’s dad used for the young drug addict. Does this suggest ill will between Nick and his father? I hope to hear more about this relationship and how it may have played into Nick’s history.

 Marco Polo?

A sullen, hoodie-clad Chris jumps off the boat. The rest of the passengers hear the splash (cannonball!) and go running from the dinner table to the vessel’s deck. Chris is nowhere to be found. Nick jumps overboard on a rescue attempt.

As Nick brings Chris to the surface, Chris claims he was just going swimming. A red herring (pun intended!) But the water feels great, so why not strike up a game of Marco Polo or sharks and minnows in the middle of the outbreak of the zombie apocalypse?!

As Nick explores the waters he encounters a walker from a capsized yacht. It’s a close call but Nick survives the encounter. But who destroyed this group’s boat?

More from Undead Walking

Strand says that there is another boat upon them (pirates? Has Alicia given up their location?) and they need to try to get out of harms way. Although we already know that speed and limited fuel supply require a careful balance.

Thankfully, no humans are lost in the season 2 premiere. But things are looking ominous on the open sea, especially with next week’s episode title “We All Fall Down”.

Who is coming after The Abigail? What do they want? Can our survivors escape harm’s way? Let’s reconvene after Fear The Walking Dead season 2 episode 2.
