Fear the Walking Dead: Can Nick stay clean?
By Susie Graham
Nick Clark was a pretty serious addict before things went bad on Fear the Walking Dead. He has been without drugs for quite some time now. Can he stay clean?
When things started to go bad, Nick was in the middle of a heavy trip in the church. He thought the drugs might be the cause of what he saw with Gloria eating people. Maybe something was in the drugs. Maybe he was crazy.
Then he actually killed his drug dealer in an effort to find out what was going on and Calvin turned. Calvin disappeared from the spot where Nick left him and came after Madison. This was crazy, Then Calvin kept coming after Nick ran him over.
But Travis and Madison were witnesses now. Something really was happening. Even in the midst of this chaos, Nick’s desire for drugs did not diminish. He knew things were going to change with this infected thing but this wasn’t rock bottom for Nick yet.
He was still rummaging through drawers and cabinets in Alica’s boyfriend’s house, and hooking himself up to a sick man’s morphine drip by hiding under the hospital bed and putting the needle between his toes.

Maybe the apocalypse is his rock bottom. It’s rock bottom for the world in a world that wasn’t looking for a rock bottom. But Nick needed a rock bottom. A fresh start. A way to feel useful and appreciated and loved for who he is without feeling like a loser all the time.
Everyone is equal now, Strand called it. There are no classes anymore. No status. Everyone starts fresh. It’s the next world. Part of getting clean involves not putting yourself in situations that were triggers for you in the past. Everything is new now. Not many old triggers.
Another good thing to do when you rehab is to try to find replacements for your old ways. Nick is now able to feel alive and free by killing walkers and enjoying spending time with his sister and with Ofelia.
Hopefully, Nick can have his new found importance and new way to frame his survival skills become a way to motivate him to stay clean. He has a strong support system with his family and new friends. We’re rooting for you, Nick!
