[Spoiler Alert: This post discusses events that occurred in the most recently aired episode of Fear The Walking Dead.]

If you have come here looking for answers about season 2 episode 6 of Fear The Walking Dead, I may not be of much help.  My mind is still reeling with questions. But one thing we know for sure is that death made more than one appearance in ‘Sicut Cervus’.

Priest and parishioners

The sixth episode of Fear The Walking Dead‘s sophomore season opens with a priest presiding over mass.  The parishioners take Communion and leave the service ready to fight against the infected taking over their world.

Thomas Abigail tries to stop the church members but the priest proclaims that Celia is the source of the evil. The argument ends here as the parishioners and priest are stopped in their tracks having unknowingly been poisoned by Celia’s Communion wafers.  And thus begins a series of deaths that occur in the episode.

Luis, Miguel & the border patrol

A border patrolmen named Miguel is supposed to assist Luis and Strand in crossing the Mexican border.  Miguel arrives with another guard and comes aboard the Abigail to negotiate.  Meanwhile, the rest of the survivors hide below deck in the engine room.

We hear gunshots and learn that both Miguel and the other guard are dead, with Luis not far behind them.  Luis utters sentiments about his mother and asks Daniel to give her a special coin with an owl on it.

The coin never makes it to Celia, however, as Daniel tosses it in the ocean. But the survivors do make their way to shore stopping first at the church.  The fallen parishioners have turned.

Our group fights their way through the infected with Madison facing a very close call.  Chris does not come to her aid, but thankfully Alicia rescues her mother and the group travels onward to the Abigail compound.

Thomas

The group is greeted at the compound by Celia and the staff.  They are required to surrender their weapons much to Daniel’s chagrin. Celia reacts minimally to the news of Luis’s death, which is a red flag, if I ever saw one!

The same cannot be said for Strand who is visibly moved when he learns that Thomas has been bitten, presumably by one of the infected parishioners back at the church.  Strand tenderly cares for Thomas in his final hours, even promising to die alongside him.

Celia prepares poisoned wafers for two and tells Strand she is proud of his decision to join Thomas in death.  As Strand watches Thomas breathe his final breath, we learn that the wafers have not been eaten after all.

Strand told Thomas that Celia would “take care of them” but apparently he has changed his mind.  Victor shoots Thomas in the head to keep him from turning and joining the infected in Celia’s cellar.

Final count: 5 +++

Thomas, Luis, Miguel, another Mexican border patrolman, a priest, and more parishioners than these old eyes can count

There was certainly a lot of death in Fear The Walking Dead this week.  There was also much debate among the characters on the topic of death.

  • Daniel and Celia disagree over who actually killed the parishioners.
  • Alicia and Chris argue over whether or not Chris was going to allow Madison to die.
  • Ofelia, Nick, and Daniel argue over how Luis should die.
  • Strand struggles with the choices he makes surrounding Thomas’s death.

Fear The Walking Dead has introduced many questions about the definition of death in a zombie apocalypse.  And it looks like the debate will continue in next week’s episode when Celia learns of Thomas’s circumstances. Until then . . .
