[Spoiler Alert: This post discusses events that occurred in the most recently aired episode of Fear The Walking Dead.]

Season 2 episode 7 of Fear The Walking Dead opens on the heels of Victor shooting Thomas to keep him from reanimating.  Not only does the episode open with death, it may have ended in death as well.  Let’s take a look . . .

If we have learned anything from The Walking Dead franchise, it is that you cannot be certain that someone is dead if you do not “see” it. Furthermore, you cannot always be sure that you are “seeing” what you think you are.

Our certainty is also diminished when the episode includes ghosts, nightmares, and flashbacks. With that said, let’s discuss the events in ‘Shiva’ and make our best guess about who did not survive the episode.

Jorge

Jorge is a member of Celia’s staff who goes to check on an imprisoned Daniel.  As he approaches Daniel offering him food, Daniel head butts him and Jorge falls to the ground.

I actually thought Jorge may have been merely temporarily knocked out while Daniel made his escape.  However, Talking Dead included Jorge in its memoriam segment. So, I suspect Jorge has served his last meal.

Celia Flores

Celia unlocks the cellar and Madison follows her into the area.  As Celia talks about all Madison would do for her son, Madison slowly backs out of the cellar saying she would indeed do “anything” for him.  She closes the cellar gate and locks Celia in with the infected.

We can only assume that Celia will be torn apart by the undead, but we never actually see her character again if my memory serves correctly.  Talking Dead includes Celia in the death count, but like I said, I am little hesitant to assume too much.  But I do strongly suspect that Celia is a goner.

Daniel Salazar

Daniel enters the cellar after head butting Jorge and escaping from his imprisonment.  After listening to the ghost of Griselda he chooses to “free” the infected in the cellar by lighting the area on fire. We do not see him escape the cellar.  He must be dead, right?  I am going to hold off on confirming this one.

Talking Dead does not include Daniel in its memoriam, and while Gale Ann Hurd speaks of Daniel being freed from his ghosts in the “Inside Fear The Walking Dead” segment, she does not expressly say that he is dead. Furthermore, she states on Talking Dead, that in the creators’ minds, he is not gone. Hmmm….

Close calls

We also experienced several close calls in episode 7.  Chris threatens to kill a man’s son.  Chris and Travis fight almost to the death.  We briefly fear that Ofelia has been bitten before we see Daniel awaken and learn that it was just a nightmare.

Wounded relationships

Madison and Nick come to odds over their beliefs about the undead, so much so that Nick refuses to escape the compound with his mother, sister, and Strand.

Travis insists that Nick lie to Madison about finding him. Chris appears to be going through some sort of self-fulfilling prophecy proclaiming he is a monster. Travis disagrees and the two fight. Ofelia believes her father is dead and is heartbroken.  Can these relationships survive under these circumstances?

Final count: I honestly cannot be certain.

I would love to hear what our readers say about the count.  How many would you include as confirmed dead in Fear The Walking Dead‘s mid-season finale? I am anxious to hear your thoughts. At least we have much to discuss while we wait until August 21st for the back half of season 2!
