The Walking Dead’s Merritt Wever cast in Netflix western Godless

The Walking Dead actress Merritt Wever was cast in the upcoming Scott Frank and Steven Soderbergh Western miniseries Godless to air on Netflix.

Fans of the The Walking Dead have embraced Merritt Wever in her role on the zombie survival drama as Dr. Denise Cloyd, but now they can see her in a whole new kind of way thanks to the accomplished actress being cast in the upcoming Netflix Western Godless.

Wever is an an award-winning actress. She earned an Emmy for her work on the groundbreaking series Nurse Betty and had prominent roles in the shows New Girl and Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip as well as films like Birdman and Signs. Now, she is being tapped by writer/director Scott Frank and executive producer Steven Soderbergh for a the new Western series on Netflix.

On Godless, Merritt Wever will play a character named Mary Agnes. The Hollywood Reporter describes the character as being  “the brash widow of the late mayor of Le Belle, a town where all of the men have died in a mining accident.” There is little doubt that Wever can bring some of her charm and charisma to the role going forward.

The show will chronicle the adventures of Frank Griffin (played by Jeff Daniels) in 1884 La Belle, New Mexico as he wrecks havoc searching for his partner-turned-enemy Roy Good (portrayed by Unbroken‘s Jack O’Connell). When Griffin arrives in La Belle, he discovers that the town is made up entirely of women, as all the men of the community are dead.

Other actors reported to have signed on to the project are Jeremy Bobb (The Knick) and Thomas Brodie-Sangster (The Maze Runner, Game of Thrones). With a strong cast, a large audience on Netflix, and an untapped viewing group in fans of Westerns, Godless could become another hit on the resume for Merritt Wever.

While Godless may not be like The Walking Dead, Merritt Wever’s addition to the cast should help make the upcoming Netflix Western more appealing to fans who may not have heard of the project or have an interest in the genre of television.
