The Walking Dead season 7 Comic Con trailer breakdown
By Adam Carlson
AMC released a trailer for The Walking Dead at Comic Con International. Here are the highs and lows from the hit zombie survival drama’s teaser video.
The moments leading up to the release of the Comic Con trailer for a new season of The Walking Dead is intense. Considering the long break between seasons, this is the opportunity for AMC to knock fans off their feet with teases and looks into what the upcoming season has to offer.

On July 22, 2016, the trailer for season 7 was released. Fans hoped for a deeper look into the Negan kill scene which left Rick and the group in major trouble during the season 6 finale. There were also hopes to see more about the people on horses who met Carol and Morgan.
While the trailer hit all the topics it possibly could, it still kind of fell flat. As explained in our previous article about expectations for Comic Con’s big release of The Walking Dead‘s trailer, I essentially nailed all the things on my wish list for the video. Still, it was a bit underwhelming.
First of all, the trailer took looks back in time. Fans are now pretty tired of seeing Negan point his bat at potential victims and adding the flashbacks to their previous relationships was a great idea that didn’t quite mesh well together. Plus, the scenes chosen for each character were a bit odd, with no focus on Judith or Lori for Carl, no Merle for Daryl, no Tyreese or Bob for Sasha, and more powerful images could have been used. This was a nice tribute to the characters, but was also a missed opportunity to make the emotional connections of these characters more powerful.
After that sequence, came the some minor teases for Ezekiel and The Kingdom and the displays of power from The Saviors. These were nice, but the major takeaway from this teaser was the bloodied barbed-wire baseball bat. Some fans were thinking that Rick’s group would get away relatively unharmed, but this bat confirmed that there will be death.
Then came the displays of power. Negan’s men going to their knee in tribute to the leader of The Saviors as he walked by was a great touch. It also proved that Negan demands respect from not only the surrounding territories, but from his own people as well.
Another thing fans were really waiting for was a glimpse of King Ezekiel and his pet tiger Shiva as well as The Kingdom. That was one area where The Walking Dead’s season 7 executed. However, fans of the comic book may be a bit disappointed that the leader of The Kingdom isn’t a spitting image of his inked counterpart, but they should be pleased by the fantastic voice of the character. In addition, there is some worry about the CGI tiger being accepted as reality.
Fans are then treated to scenes with lots of characters who weren’t in Negan’s lineup in what are action packed and fun teases, but lack a lot of intensity since the many of the major characters couldn’t be shown in scenes past the Negan beating scene.
Other fun scenes include Carol’s confusion, Negan possibly taking the “little pig” situation from the comics, and Spencer openly questioning the decision to attack The Saviors instead of work with them.
Finally, the big after credit sequence in this trailer involved Tara and Heath. These two characters have been gone on a very long supply run and have no clue what is going on in Alexandria. But things got messy for these characters that people have forgotten about over the course of the last four episodes of The Walking Dead which they did not appear in. Still, those survivors look to be in major trouble and could have a very fun story going forward.
Oh, and ENID GOT OUT OF THE CLOSET!

Maybe it was seeing the amazing trailer for Fear The Walking Dead earlier in the day that made the Comic Con trailer for The Walking Dead season 7 feel a bit underwhelming. Perhaps it is the high standard fans have come to expect from these sneak peeks. Or it could be that the entire Negan kill scenario is played out by now. Either way, this trailer was a good peek at the future of the show, but it lacked the punch of previous efforts.
