Fear the Walking Dead Recap: Episode 208-Grotesque
By Susie Graham
Grotesque was the title of the mid-season premiere for season 2 of Fear the Walking Dead, which aired on AMC Sunday, August 21st, taking us back to Mexico.
Bloody Nick wakes up and want to find a place for people who believe the way Celia believed. The Abigail’s housemaid who remained alive left the hacienda with a boy to find his father, but Nick left on his own headed toward a mountain to find people who believed the dead were not truly dead, even though she warned him the road would be rough and the people would be happy to be in this lawless land created by the infected.
Nick seemed energized by his solo adventure to seek the dead and their companions. During his journey he was remembering his time in rehab with Gloria. During some role-playing he got out some anger at his father even though he felt guilty doing so because he said his father wouldn’t hurt a fly. He told Gloria things like “You’re always tired. You’re not there. You stopped being there for me. Fathers are supposed to show their sons how to be a man in the world,” when she was supposed to be listening to Nick as his father.
Nick found a little trouble along with some water and cars and a radio. Some bad guys shot at him and forced him into the desert. He had a tough time with some nopales, cactus, which made him sick.
Back to the rehab memories, Madison arrived at a meeting with NIck and had to tell him that his father had been in a fatal car accident. Dogs attacked Nick waking him from his dreams of his father. When Nick escaped the dogs by climbing on the roof of the abandoned car he was using as his pillow, the dogs got distracted by an approaching herd of walkers that was attracted by their barking. Fortunately, the barking and biting of the dogs, provided a more immediate food source for the walkers than Nick.
Another stroke of luck for Nick as gunfire calls the still hungry walkers away from him. He sneaks a few pieces of dog rib meat. Steals a belt from a slow walker to clamp up his leg bite and joins the herd camouflaged in guts and blood.
40 miles to Tijuana he stumbles along with the herd hearing voices from the herd almost like Daniel heard from his past. Some armed men come along ready to put down the herd, but one of the man who gets out to shoot them freaks out at seeing Nick looking too alive to be undead and gets devoured by the herd and his friends drive off and leave him.
Nick can’t keep up with even the undead and falls behind. As he lay passed out on the road, he remembers being in the church reading the book his dad gave him. He was talking about the book with Gloria and doing drugs in the church. The rain wakes him up.
A woman with two men watch him from the side of the road. The men seem to want to help him. NIck continues to limp his way to a town. The 3 find him and want to know if his bite was from the walkers and he’s infected. He communicates that it was a dog, un perro, no infectado.

Thankfully there is a doctor who speaks English. When the doctor tells him he is close to infection and he would have died out there, Nick tells him he wouldn’t mind being dead. The doctor tells him death is not to be feared, but it is not to be pursued; there is a difference. When the doctor asks him why he traveled all this way, NIck tells him he wants to be where the dead aren’t monsters.
The doctor opens the doors to a community of people playing soccer and alive.
