Fear the Walking Dead: Doctor’s orders for NIck in Mexico
By Susie Graham
Alejandro, the pharmacist and local doctor to the people in La Colonia on Fear the Walking Dead, had some pretty simple advice for Nick when he arrived.
Last week on Fear the Walking Dead, when Luciana brought Alejandro his injured patient from outside La Colonia to patch up, he had many questions for him as would any doctor. It’s customary to fill out forms and patient history and for the doctor to ask some questions as he is treating his patient.
In this situation, the questions are slightly different. Luciana in taking the preliminary patient history, first wanted to know if the bite was from an infected. Finding out it was from a dog, she allowed him to see the doctor.

The doctor wanted to know how far he had traveled. He informed NIck that he would have died had they not treated him now. When Nick said he wouldn’t have minded that, the doctor received free information.
Knowing how far Nick had traveled and knowing the world situation, the doctor probed further. What would make him travel that distance and not treat his wound. NIck said he wanted to find a place where the dead were not looked at as monsters.
At this point, Alejandro seems to be the perfect Mexican country doctor. He’s a pharmacist and smart man. He can heal with his medicine and he listens to his patients. He saw there was more to NIck’s wounds that the physical bleeding and infection. NIck’s heart and soul are bleeding.
Next: Nick: Romanticizing the dead
There is poetry in Nick. He thinks he wouldn’t mind dying. He wants to be where the dead aren’t looked at as monsters. Alejandro opened the doors for him to a community that may be just what NIck needs.
But he didn’t give him a free pass. He gave him a warning first–Doctor’s orders.
“You’re foolish. Death is not to be feared. But it shouldn’t be pursued either. There is a difference”
He matched Nick’s poetry with poetry of his own. Hopefully, Nick will listen.
