What’s up your sleeve, Dwight? Does Negan really trust you?
By Susie Graham
Dwight on the Walking Dead is one of the most interesting and complicated characters going into season 7. He’s a villain to be sure, but there’s more to it.
As we go into season 7 of The Walking Dead, Dwight and Honey will certainly figure into the events that unfold. Dwight is an interesting character to watch and consider. As always, I’m considering things from a show-only perspective.
The only part I’m considering from the comics about Dwight is that I’ve heard comic readers say that they are as excited about seeing Dwight join the cast as they are about Negan. So he must be pretty interesting.
So far we’ve seen some conflicting scenarios played out that have included Dwight. When Daryl met him the first time, he was trying to escape the grasp of the Saviors with Honey and another girl. They seemed fed up with the rules and kneeling before Negan. Honey said they earned what they took.
Once their plan for Patty failed and they lost Tina, the other girl, it almost seemed like they might join Daryl and come back to Alexandria. But I think they weren’t confident enough in Daryl and didn’t know enough about our group to make that decision.
They knew that Negan and the Saviors would catch up with them eventually and they better just go back and accept their punishment. Maybe the bike and the bow would be a small gift to make up for their bad choice.

When Dwight showed up again, it was when the arrow got Denise. I presume the plan was to get rid of Daryl–Rosita, too, but mostly Daryl, because he knew about Dwight and Honey. Dwight’s scarred face lets us know that their attempt to leave did not go unpunished.
Now here’s where I start wondering. Austin Amelio said on Talking Dead that he’s moving up in the Saviors. He also said he didn’t feel bad about killing Denise. (YNB’s shocked face was precious!) I wonder if he doesn’t feel bad because he’s just adapting to the world or if Austin was just being coy and trying to misdirect and not give away anything.
I wonder if Negan really trusts Dwight because he thinks he wouldn’t betray him again because he’s afraid of even harsher punishment or if perhaps, Negan is giving Dwight a position of power to make him feel useful and to keep him close. As in keep your friends close and you enemies closer.
Honey seems to be dishing the dirt to someone in the trailer. She says something about how they can always take more. It’s very mafia and gang like. Mob Wives and The Untouchables. Another slight comic reference I’ve heard is about Negan not hurting women or children or something similar.

That reminds me of the scene in The Untouchables where Al Capone had sent in someone to blow up a corner tavern by leaving a brief case with a bomb in it. In the movie there was a little kid in the bar. I remember reading that gangsters from that time period were upset with the movie saying that Al would never have sent in a bomb if he knew there was a kid there.
There’s a very warped sense of morality and logic in there. It’s okay to smash somebody’s head in with a baseball bat at a dinner table (ironic that it was a baseball bat in The Untouchables, too.) , but don’t ever say that Capone would bomb a tavern if there was a child in there.
In any case, I’m wondering just how much Dwight wants to move up in the Saviors organization and for what reasons. Does he really want to kneel before Negan now? It must have taken quite a bit of courage to attempt to leave before. Perhaps the comics have some clues, but I’m just going by what I’ve seen and what we know from the show.
Next: Carol's emotional journey
He’s going to be fun to watch in season 7. Daryl has no sympathy for him now that he betrayed him twice. If Daryl lives, Dwight will certainly be on Daryl’s radar for killing or at least for getting back his vest and his bike.
