Be careful, Nick, Alejandro is a seducer of people, too
By Susie Graham
Fear the Walking Dead’s Nick is looking for something. He’s found 2 father figures in the world of the infected. What do they have in common?
On Fear the Walking Dead, there is more beauty, poetry and symbolism than we might realize. The beauty of the zombie world of The Walking Dead is that is has so many layers and so much depth. There is so much to peel away, if we try.
Victor Strand told Madison that he was a seducer of people. It was a beautiful deadpan line of humor and pure Strand. But as with many lines from both shows, as thoughts swirl in my head, it can be used for so much more.
Nick himself is a seducer of people–starting with the audience. He seduced Gloria, Celia, Victor, Luciana, even Travis. NIck and Victor both have to persuade with their words. They need a charm in order to get what they want. Nick’s charm is so natural and child-like, it’s incredibly disarming.
We have just been introduced to another seducer of people, Alejandro. La Colonia is a cult. It preys on the cultural views of death of the Mexican people and the Catholic religion of the people who hope to go to heaven. The idea of being a chosen people is a seduction in itself.
Most cult leaders when portrayed on television are transparent, we know they must possess some type of manipulative charm in order to get their followers to listen to them, but as the audience, we see through them. Alejandro is different. We are charmed by him, too.

He uses poetry and a goodness that seduces us as well. “Death is not to be feared, but it should not be pursued.” He only chastises Nick for putting his people in danger. He creates every illusion of caring about his people.
Seduction is a seductive word. But by its nature it’s luring you for its own reasons. It wants you to do something that might not be the best thing for you. Nick is susceptible to seduction. The seduction of drugs. The seduction of Victor. The seduction of Celia. The seduction of Alejandro. The seduction of the innocence of children.
Soon, Nick will need to use his own seductive powers to seduce himself. He will need to be seduced by things like confidence, hope, survival.
Next: NIck: Romanticizing the dead.
NIck wanted to go where the dead weren’t monsters. Hopefully, NIck will realize that the dead aren’t monsters. Only the wandering bodies that are left are monsters. If he wants to survive and bring back beauty into the world, he needs to kill the monsters to keep humanity alive.
