Is it too late to help Chris Manawa on Fear The Walking Dead?
By Adam Carlson
Fans of Fear The Walking Dead have struggled to embrace Chris, but is there anything the hit AMC zombie survival could do to turn the character around?
One of the major criticisms of Fear The Walking Dead is that fans are having a hard time relating to the characters and developing a connection to the them. This is despite the show using the first season to introduce each individual one to the audience and slow down the action to do so.
Now, the show has picked up the pace in a big way, yet some characters are getting left behind. For example, Nick Clark has gotten entire episodes devoted to his survival in the zombie apocalypse, but very little attention has been paid to Chris Manawa.
When Chris was on television, he was not shown in a good light. He was either annoying people to watch his videos, complaining about something, or making horrible decisions that put survivors in danger or made things very awkward in the group.
From the previews for episode 10 of season 2, Fear The Walking Dead is finally turning some of their attention to Chris, but is it too little, too late? While there have been plenty of redemption stories on The Walking Dead, Fear The Walking Dead will need to create a way to bring Chris back from being perhaps the most disliked character on the series to being tolerable once again.
If this is to be executed, it needs to be done over time.

Much like the situation with Father Gabriel back in season 5, it is going to take time to earn back the trust of fans. He will need to prove that he is sane enough to be part of a group and be tough enough mentally to kill both walkers and humans when necessary. Eventually, he could be forgiven for acting like a brat and acting like a creep toward Madison and Alicia.
The big question at this point is whether or not the character is worth planning a massive redemption story for. Would Chris be better suited to tell his own story or help Travis develop as a character?
Travis needs redemption at this point too, but he is much closer to fan forgiveness than Chris is. If the show were to write Chris out to strengthen Travis’ character, it would be an interesting way to stay goodbye to a unique, yet troubled character while developing Travis to be more of a strong survivor that people can relate to.

What do you think? Is it too late to try to make fans like Chris? Or should Fear The Walking Dead try to find a way to use his character to enhance the story of another character? Let us know your thoughts on this debate in the comments below.
