Great Character Introductions on The Walking Dead: Jesus
By Susie Graham
We only meet a character once. Sometimes that introduction is just woven into the story. Other times it’s a dramatic event. Let’s look at some of the great introductions on The Walking Dead.
Paul Rovia aka Jesus literally ran into Rick as his introduction to the The Walking Dead. Comic readers were probably surprised at the name change from Monroe to Rovia, but I’m sure they were happy to see Jesus bump into Rick.
Jesus’ introduction was unlike any other in many ways. It was quite amusing and charming in a way you wouldn’t expect for a character who was giving favorites Rick and Daryl a little what for.
Daryl and Rick had been flip-flopping on the idea of taking in new people to Alexandria after the big herd invasion and the town coming together to take a stand against the walkers. Things had quieted down in Alexandria for a few months as the town tried to rebuild and heal.
This is the next world. I hope it’s good to you guys.
Now Daryl and Rick were out on their boring daily scouting trip for people, supplies and food with an extra little mission for Daryl of pop for Tara and the extra hunky dunky tip from Eugene about the underrated grain of sorghum.
Their boring daily road trip got some firecrackers thrown into it. Jesus tossed them a story about having been chased by the dead as his excuse for bumping into Rick when he really pick-pocketed his keys.
As Daryl and Rick went back and forth about whether or not Jesus should be someone to check out as a possible prospect for the 3 questions, the Benny Hill episode of The Walking Dead was off and running.

Jesus’ introduction as a character would continue into the next episode when he would meet Michonne, Carl, and the rest of the group and tell them about the Hilltop and how their world just got a whole lot bigger.

Jesus really was the start of the where we find ourselves now in season 7. His choice of words in his greeting to Rick and Daryl of next world instead of new world was especially appropriate as his introduction was really part of the next chapter for our show. The rest of his greeting was especially ironic because this next chapter has not been very good to us so far.
