How would the cast of The Walking Dead celebrate Thanksgiving if they were just neighbors coming together to eat a big meal? Here are my thoughts.

Sometimes I like to pretend the meal scene at the end of the Season 7 season premiere is the group getting together for other occasions. Birthdays, holidays, block parties. On this Thanksgiving Day it makes the day brighter to imagine that scene at the end of “The Day Will Come When You Won’t Be” is a Thanksgiving potluck feast on a warm Georgia day in November. Here’s my vision of who would bring what, with a few helpful recipes sprinkled in to inspire your own holiday menu.

Appetizers:

Dwight would likely bring little sandwiches to eat while watching the day’s big game. He’s the kind who wouldn’t bring enough for everyone, but just enough to feed himself. Because he’s Dwight. Ezekiel’s crop of pomegranates would yield some lovely pomegranate dip. Aaron’s homemade charcuterie platter would be the talk of the meal for years to come.

Side dishes:

Eugene, being the practical guy that he is, would no doubt bring the mashed potatoes. They’re a staple of the Thanksgiving meal and he’d add his own personal touch to make them the tastiest taters imaginable. Maggie’s green bean casserole is a family recipe handed down from Hershel’s mother, no doubt. Morgan’s smoked sausage salad is a huge hit with the group.

Sasha’s cheesy bacon jalapeno cornbread recipe will knock your socks off. Rosita’s fresh baked bread makes the house smell good all day long.

Main course:

Rick and Michonne would bring venison, prepared with Rick’s Texas venison family recipe. Daryl’s roasted pheasants make a nice addition to the meal, but honestly it’s Negan’s honey glazed ham that steals the show. A ham from a big ham. How perfect. Too bad he’s that guy from down the street no one wanted to invite but he invited himself.

Dessert:

Trust Carol to take charge of the desserts. From traditional pumpkin pies to apple pies, she’d be the one bringing the sweets to the table. Perhaps she’d bring some pumpkin mousse for the occasion.

Carl would make sure that there is mac & cheese for Judith along with some cranberry sauce. Spencer rounds out the group with the evening’s liquor assortment from his—ahem—personal stash.

Of course, in the world of The Walking Dead only so a few of these recipes would actually work and it’s highly unlikely that Dwight and Negan would be invited over for dinner. Cooking meals is a lot different in the apocalypse, not to mention no one knows what day it is. However, it’s fun to imagine the group coming together to share a meal together.
