The Walking Dead season 7 episode 7 covered a lot of ground. Who survived? Who did not? What did we lose along the way?

We did not stay in one place very long in this episode of The Walking Dead.  We bounced back and forth among several different story lines.

Michonne is solo on foot.  Rick and Aaron are out looking for goods for their next offering to Negan.  Father Gabriel and Spencer have a heart to heart talk while on a drive.  Rosita and Eugene are on a mission to make a bullet. And Carl and Jesus continue their mission to infiltrate Negan’s compound.

Let’s review the losses incurred in ‘Sing Me A Song’ and find out if everyone made it through this episode of The Walking Dead.

Carl gives Jesus the slip

Carl and Jesus make their way toward Negan’s compound hiding in one of the Saviors’ box trucks leaving from Hilltop.  As they get closer, Jesus begins marking a trail by dropping syrup out the back of the truck.

Jesus explains to Carl that in order to get the drop on the Sanctuary, they need to go ahead and exit the truck now with a drop and roll. Carl feigns ignorance and asks Jesus to “show [him] first”.

Jesus exits the truck and rolls to safety only to spy Carl waving goodbye from the truck. “Show me first”, fool me twice. Carl pulls one over on Jesus and continues on with his solo mission.

Don’t cry for me RoSpencita

Meanwhile, back in Alexandria, Rosita and Eugene are heading out for the machine room to make a bullet.  Spencer asks Rosita about joining him and Father Gabriel on a scavenging run and she refuses.

Rosita makes it very clear that she and Spencer are splitsville. There is no love loss for Rosita. She has had it with Spencer’s tirades suggesting Rick is a failure as a leader. Rosita also has no tolerance for Spencer’s selfish habit of hiding goods for himself.

Carl takes out two of Negan’s men

Carl makes it into the Sanctuary, selects a high power firearm from the truck and takes out two of Negan’s men. He proclaims that he is looking for Negan but is soon wrestled away from the gun.  Thus begins “bring someone else’s kid to work day”.

In usual twisted fashion, Negan seems a little more concerned with parading Carl around the Sanctuary than with the actual loss of his men. Sure, he threatens Carl with retribution, but it appears to be more of a play in a game of infatuation with Carl.

Father Gabriel ditches his ride like a boss

We shift gears to Father Gabriel and Spencer in the car on their supply run. Spencer appears to be more interested in seeking some sort of absolution for his hatred towards Rick than he does with keeping his eyes on the road.

Father Gabriel asks Spencer to stop the car. I thought he was going to be like “Dude, you’re not watching the road, let me out”. Instead, Father Gabriel calmly points out Spencer’s less than stellar attitude and exits the vehicle.

Former scaredy cat Father Gabriel has certainly grown in self-confidence and has developed a keen ability to evaluate character. [Insert fist bump.]

Mark loses face

Too soon? I really don’t mean to make light of Mark’s misfortune. I know that my posts often get a little tongue in cheek. Dang. I did it again. The point is, Negan’s “wife” Amber has “cheated” on Negan with her real love, Mark. And now the two men need to iron out their differences. Sorry, I’ll stop. No need to add more fuel to the fire. Seriously, I’m done. Moving on.

Carl’s eye bandage

Negan’s psychological games with Carl include his insistence that Carl remove his eye bandage and reveal his wound.  Obviously, this is an extremely vulnerable situation for Carl, which is exactly why Negan pursues it.

Carl displays remarkable perseverance in this situation.  He has no idea what Negan has planned for him upon his capture, but he charges on, never giving up, despite the tears, the fear, and the humiliation. Rick would certainly be proud.

But I also suspect that Rick will be none too happy about Negan’s obsession with Carl nor his spending time with Judith. I think Rick’s pot will be close to boiling over very soon.

Final count, 2

We do not know their names, but two Saviors were killed by Carl upon his arrival at the Sanctuary. A variety of other “losses” were incurred during episode 7.07 and more than a few people faced dire straits.

Rick and Aaron have arrived at a supply source secured by water and walkers.  How are they going to traverse this hurdle?

And Michonne is holding a female Savior at gunpoint demanding that she take her to Negan. What will be the fallout of this encounter?

What happens when Rick finds out about Negan playing “Daddy” to Carl and Judith on his porch? Yikes!

We will check back next week after The Walking Dead mid-season 7 finale.
