In a quickfire question and answer session with ABC, Jeffrey Dean Morgan gave some insight into how The Walking Dead could have been different.

When ABC News talked to The Walking Dead’s Negan himself, Jeffrey Dean Morgan, about how the show could have been different, Morgan gave some interesting answers.

What if Negan had been there from the start instead of Rick? Morgan sees The Walking Dead as a completely different show. “No one would be angry at Negan right now,” he said, “or scared of Negan. Possibly.” Negan would have been a total hero, Morgan said. They would have seen Negan’s beloved bat, Lucille, in a whole new light. He would have been the hero keeping everyone alive.

When asked about killing Maggie instead of Glenn, Morgan knows that he would have had a huge uphill battle to introduce his character under those circumstances and manage to keep fans. Killing a pregnant woman? No way. (After Sunday’s “Sing Me a Song” it’s clear that Negan has strict rules about women, and we also know from Episode 704 “Service” that Negan was interested in Maggie and is sad to hear she didn’t make it…but unlike Negan, we know that she’s alive and well and living at the Hilltop)

Perhaps most interesting was Morgan’s desire to pit Negan against the Governor.  And who would win that battle? That’s a no brainer for Morgan. “Negan. There’s no one that’s going to take Negan at this point. I think, to me, I think Negan is the villain of villains that’s been introduced to this world.” The only person who would come close would be David Morrissey’s Governor, and Morgan thinks that Negan would have that battle, hands down.

Negan has made quite the impression on The Walking Dead. Love him or hate him or hate to love him, Negan is here to stay for a while.
