Rick and Negan are the strongest leaders in The Walking Dead. Which one is actually the better leader when it comes to creating a community that can survive and thrive in the apocalypse?
There’s been no shortage of bad leaders in The Walking Dead. Some are evil. Some are incompetent. Some are just ineffectual. Some, like Deanna, just didn’t have a great grasp of the realities of the apocalyptic world.
Rick may have never asked to be the leader of the Atlanta survivors, but he stepped into that role and has tried to maintain his leadership. No matter what the group has faced Rick has been the man with the plan trying to keep everyone alive. Until the group crossed paths with Negan and the Saviors, that is.
Now Rick is no longer in charge of Alexandria. But he still has a loyal group of survivors that trust him and will fight for him. Is that enough to make him the best leader? Or does Negan’s brutality and sharp discipline make him the better leader in a lawless world?
In order to figure out who is actually a better leader it’s necessary to look at how each leader handles the basic problems of leading a group of people. In The Walking Dead world survival is the main priority. But after that comes the problems of developing a working community that can provide for many people.
If there is going to ever be any kind of society again strong leaders are going to need to take charge of each individual community to keep that community running. So using a set of leadership criteria that includes good leadership skills and the ability to create a community it’s time to find out who is the better leader: Rick or Negan.
