Norman Reedus offers fans opportunity to win autographs in charity drive
Norman Reedus took to social media Monday night to announce a charity raffle benefiting childhood cancer patients.
“Do a good thing!” the Walking Dead star tweeted, linking to a YouCaring page. The campaign raised thousands of dollars in the hours following the actor’s tweets.
According to the YouCaring page Reedus linked to, every $5 donated gets fans an entry into a drawing for Daryl Dixon and The Walking Dead memorabilia signed by Reedus. While neither the page nor Reedus specify what those items are, a photo shows Daryl Dixon figures, a fleece blanket and other items featuring the iconic character.
CannaKids
The raffle benefits CannaKids. This organization uses cannabis oil to treat childhood cancer, epilepsy and autism.
Scientists are still investigating the curative properties of cannabis, but the American Cancer Society reports that THC and other cannabinoid chemicals have been shown to kill certain cancer cells in a lab setting. Some animal trials showed a slowing or reduction in cancer growth.
Limited human trials have so far been inconclusive, but there are a slew of personal anecdotes online praising cannabis and cannabis oil.
One such anecdote comes from Tracy Ryan, the organizer of Reedus’ YouCaring drive. Ryan saw her daughter Sophie survive a brain tumor after a combined treatment of chemotherapy and cannabis oil.
Ryan had financial help during her daughter’s fight with cancer and says she now feels inspired to help other families.
“We hope to pay it forward to those who are now in the same financial troubles we once found ourselves in,” she writes on SavingSophie.org, a Web site dedicated to both education and fund raising.
On the “Norman Reedus Supports CannaKids’ Pediatric Patients” page, Ryan highlights the cost of the cannabis oil.
“The medicine is really expensive…and insurance doesn’t cover the cost,” she says. “A huge thank you to Norman for pitching in to aid these patients.”
