One of the best weapons the survivors have against Negan may be right in front of them. But will Dwight turn against Negan and help the other communities fight for freedom?
It’s hard not to feel a little bit sorry for Dwight on The Walking Dead. Sure, he stole Daryl’s bike and beloved crossbow back in Season 6. And earlier this season he fed him dog food, which is more than enough to raise the ire of Daryl’s legions of fangirls.
But things haven’t been easy for Dwight. His escape attempt with Sherry and Tina ended badly. And when he did admit defeat and return to Sanctuary he faced some harsh punishment. He got the iron to the face punishment. And lost his wife when Sherry offered to marry Negan in order to save Dwight’s life.
He seems to be totally loyal to Negan and has become a foot soldier that Negan depends on. But does his allegiance run as deep as he says? There are signs that it doesn’t.
When he was trying to talk Daryl into just accepting his fate and becoming one of the Saviors he seemed to be resigned to his own fate. But not that happy about it. It’s obvious that he still loves Sherry and is torn up about her being Negan’s wife.
And his conversation with his former friend who tried to run from Sanctuary indicated some deep dissatisfaction with Negan’s rule. But Dwight doesn’t see a way out right now. He thinks that there is no choice for him and that he will have to stay at Sanctuary if he wants to live.
Alexandria Is His Way Out
Dwight might not realize it yet but Negan isn’t invincible. When he sees that Rick, Daryl and the other survivors are gearing up to fight Negan he may decide to turn on Negan. If Rick and the others approach him and convince him that they can beat Negan he may decide to help them.
Having an ally inside Sanctuary would be a huge help to the alliance. They know that Negan and the Saviors have enough people to win the war. They will have to fight strategically and use every weapon they can find. One of those weapons may be Dwight.
Dwight can give them valuable information about how many soldiers Negan really has, and how big their weapons stockpile is. Dwight can also get them information about the Saviors movements. If the survivors have access to information about the Saviors locations, numbers and plans they can fight more effectively.
And when it comes time to finally take Negan down Dwight could help them get inside Sanctuary. Dwight and Daryl have a grudging respect for each other. That may work to the advantage of the survivors.
Of course Dwight has a lot to lose if he decides to help the survivors. He already knows how brutal Negan’s punishments can be. He’d be risking worse punishment or death. But ultimately he may decide that the risk is worth it to free Sherry and himself from the control of Negan.
