Rick will be depending on Gregory to hide some pretty big secrets from the Saviors on The Walking Dead. What will happen if Gregory betrays him?

One of the biggest weapons that Rick and the Survivors have against Negan on The Walking Dead may end up ruining their chances to win the war. That’s because that weapon is Gregory. And Gregory isn’t the kind of person that is going to risk his life for anyone else. Especially for Rick or Maggie.

Right now Negan doesn’t know that Maggie is alive. He also doesn’t know that the escaped Daryl is hiding out at Hilltop. Keeping both of those things secret from Negan is key to the Survivors fight. But in order to keep those secrets they will have to get Gregory on board.

Gregory could also tell Negan and the Saviors what Rick and the Survivors are planning. That would probably be the end of the Alexandria Safe Zone. If Negan took all their guns and ammo because Carl took a shot at a Savior it’s pretty safe to assume he would kill them all for plotting an uprising.

But if the group removes Gregory as the leader at Hilltop the Saviors will know that something is up. They have a pretty good relationship with Gregory because Gregory is a pushover and will give them whatever they want. If they show up and Gregory is gone, they will want to know why.

Would Gregory Give Them Up?

Probably. He knows that just by having Maggie and Sasha at Hilltop he is risking their anger and some serious punishment for Hilltop. He wanted Maggie and Sasha to leave even though Maggie needs to stay near Dr. Carson.

Gregory already tried to turn Maggie and Sasha over to the Saviors. He only failed because Jesus was one step ahead of him. So it’s not too hard to imagine that he would try again. Keeping Daryl, an escapee from Sanctuary, would most likely get him killed if the Saviors found out.

By turning over Maggie, Sasha and Daryl to Negan and the Saviors he might be able to save his own skin. He doesn’t really care about the people of Hilltop so he’s likely more concerned with saving himself than saving them.

He could score major points with the Saviors by revealing Rick’s plan to fight back. Negan does reward those who serve him well. If Gregory betrays Rick and the Survivors by telling Negan that they are enlisting the help of the other communities to fight back it could lead to some great rewards.

What Will Happen if He Betrays Them?

There’s a better than average chance that he will.

However, Jesus knows Gregory and is a good judge of character. He correctly predicted that Gregory would turn over Maggie and Sasha and managed to hide them. So Jesus may take steps to prevent Gregory from letting the Saviors know all the secrets that Rick is depending on him to keep.

But if he does betray them and reveal Maggie, Sasha and Daryl there’s a couple ways that Negan might react. He may simply kill Rick, Maggie, Sasha, Daryl and Jesus. Or he might punish Hilltop for helping them. That’s more likely, since he likes to indirectly punish people by hurting innocent people close to them. He may also kill Gregory for lying and helping the Survivors.

Stopping Gregory Before He Betrays Them

In The Walking Dead world where the stakes are high sometimes eliminating a potential threat is the best way to take care of it. The only way to be sure that Gregory won’t betray them is to kill Gregory. But Rick, even when he’s ready to fight, will likely not want to kill him.

Rick’s made some bad decisions before. If he decides not to kill Gregory and take a chance that Gregory won’t betray them it might end badly for him. That would force the Survivors to attack the Saviors before they are ready.

If they can convince Gregory that he has a better chance of staying alive with the Survivors they might be able to get his cooperation. And IF King Ezekiel brings the Kingdom to the fight and Gregory knows that the Survivors do have a chance to win he might keep their secrets to save his own neck.
